Many Mexican citizens with credible fears have been turned about by asylum just because they want to sustain a quota for them since they're the nearest country by the USA and if their grant rate was even higher more Mexicans would try to apply for asylum.
I'm from Afghanistan and no it is extremely difficult to get asylum. Also, the bad thing about filing for asylum is that if you get denied, they issue a deportation order against you. Filing for asylum is not like AOS through other means.
