My DACA expires early August 2018 and considering we don't know what's going to happen with DACA, I'm worried I'll be caught inbetween without work authorization. Also just worried it will take a full year.

ETA2: Did some searching.. I guess it just takes forever in new york

Offices assigned to immigrant heavy areas will always take longer. So yeah, new York will take a while. But apply for the work permit through the AOS application. It's free and can be renewed for free until a decision is made on your case. If you want to, you can also apply for AP with the aos application also. You don't need a reason or time frames for this one. I think you'll be ok without renewing your DACA for August of next year (If DACA is still around), as you're allowed to stay until your case is either approved or denied. But you can always make that decision once your renewal window come closer.
