Most American Citizens aren't going to care until it effects them personally. If you are several generations in the US there wouldn't be any foreign relative for you to sponsor until say you fall in love with the foreign student in college. You date, marry, and she/he becomes a US Citizen. And your wife or husband now wants to bring over their siblings or aging parents - and now she/he can't. Many citizens might be ok with this, but is it because they aren't properly educated in immigration related matters or is it because they really don't think their spouse should be able to bring family over?
