dems have a lot to lose. no matter what happens, there's no easy way out for them in this scenario. the best they're hoping to do is cut their losses and stay quiet until midterms, this is why you don't see them as active as they used to be.
if trump gets his wall/border security(and he's gonna call it a wall, so it won't matter) that's another campaign win for him right as he gets set to move onto infrastructure, which will be another shit show and a half if we get there before mid-terms.
this is the price you pay for identity politics, you can only appease so many different groups of people without infringing on the livelihoods of everyone at some point and not actually being pragmatic about the problems of the country.
