Currently ~1% of persons get a red flag with e-verify and that's millions of US citizen employees with some sort of issue. And that's without anyone even being malicious!

With the paper I-9 process the employer can quickly check someone and get them working and the federal government can come in and audit after the fact to figure out if the paperwork is legit.
But major companies are already doing background check and if there's something wrong with the flagging system, we should fix it. I haven't read the bill, but I would imagine there is a grace period, like the READ ID act. NY is one of the last few states have to opt in this year. No more DL for entering federal building. It took like 10 years. So let's hope e-verify has a good grace period.

I can understand some of the arguments against e-verify, but if we want to get R support on this, let's think e-verify being one way to shut people's mouth on "oh more illegals will come to work and steal jobs because there is no mandatory checking."
