Thier high rates of holding college degrees are attributed to the fact that their lower class just can't cross the border, since it's way too far nor afford a plane ticket to the USA. Therefore, their educated higher class are the only ones that can actually move to the USA, and they do so through their own merits. Their lower class usually migrates illegally to other poorer South American countries nearby.

A lot of South American immigrants like Peruvians that I met in NY are actually relatively wealthy back in their home countries and don't look like that their Indegenous lower class. The lower class usually migrates to Argentina illegally since it's closer.

Since Mexico and Central America are so close to the USA, their lower class are more likely to illegally migrate there. It's the only first world country nearby.
