Communism works in China because of its population density and homogeneity.
Socialism works for Nordic nations because of their relatively small population and previously well off status.
The diversity of the United States, coupled with its lax immigration rules allows for capitalism to strive.

I also do believe communism may work in many African countries as a means of getting out of poverty, then a gradual shift to capitalism would be necessary to maintain growth, like early soviet era.
