They could also impeach someone and that would clear the Senate calendar to deal with the impeachment instead of doing SC votes.
With a 5-3 or 6-3 SC, disputes in counts on votes (especially in states that matter) will go in Trump's favor and that would tilt the election in his favor. Dems need to win by a very big margin.
Honestly we're in a downward spiral of no norms matter and this is a very slippery slope to the bottom where all it matters is winning and the division between the two parties will get bigger and bigger. There will be large swings in policies and one party undoes the work of the other, over and over. It puts America in a permanent stun lock where it cannot move forward. As Abraham Lincoln once said “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. This ever increasing division is the biggest threat to the united in "United States" since the civil war.
