My guess is she didn't know, her parents didn't tell her, and the lawyer just took her word for it, but should have double checked.

I also had an encounter with CBP when I was a minor, but I was able to request my record from CBP where it says I was given "Voluntary Return", which does not carry the penalties that do come with an "Expedited Removal".

I'll have my visa interview in another 6-8 months.
