For renewal, passport photos are not required, but if you want to be safe, then go for it. Doesn’t hurt.
I sent in my renewal app on May 18, and I was approved June 10th. Received my EAD card yesterday. I was suppose to expire on October 25th. And I didn’t send my passport photos.
