McCain always supported the original Dream Act. It was in 2008 that he switched, so it only makes sense that he would support a water-downed Republican version of it.

I think he's one of the Republicans that is actually a "decent guy." Dunno too much, but every time I followed what he's done in the past, it's usually stuff I agree with.

if it was a combination of Rubio and Durbin, then thats fine, but only Rubio version, i dont think it will be good at all, and i dont think it will pass (democrats and republicans will block it)
I don't think any Dreamer will deny a non-immigrant visa that lets them work, go to school, drive and travel. You can then get a GC through sponsorship. It takes the ban off for those that do not qualify under 245i. Family sponsorship comes very relevant. There is nothing in the Rubio's proposal that says you cannot apply for USC. You can. I think it will pass easily in both Senate and House. Just sit back, relax and watch.

So before you just reject this, think carefully about what it means for millions of dreamers. I have doubts too about if it can pass, I think we all do, but I do support this bill, I think you should too.
Last stand? How? That is what people said in Dec of 2010. There is also CIR. perhaps Obama's EO?

Should the visa expire you retain your social security number and you're considered an overstay regardless of how you first arrived.

Option 2: You have no legal residency, if caught by ICE or any law enforcement partaking in "secure communities" you'll most likely get deported, you cannot legally work or drive. You can legalize your stay by U-visa if you happen to be a victim of a violent crime, marriage and if you're EWI you'd have to go to your country of origin and then your spouse must try to get you a waiver for your 10 year ban (about 50% chance of success) or by VAWA if you were a female spouse of an abusive USC.

This is why.
One article said, it the Visa expires, the non-immigrant would not have to worry about removal.

A non-immigrant status can potentially open many doors. You can get sponsorship for a H1b visa and eventually get permanent residency through the employment based category. This option is easier for STEM graduates than others. You can slo start a small business, create jobs and employ USCs - that may lead to some sort of PR status eventually. For others, if joining the military becomes an option for this hypothetical visa category, then you will be on a fast track to citizenship.

I don't like this non-dream dream-act either. But at some point we all need to come to terms with the cliche phrases like "beggers cannot be choosers" and "something is better than nothing".
I agree. Good post. Also, it would be interesting to see how long the initial Visa is. Durbin's DA could pass later also and/or CIR.

McCain was also the biggest supporter of CIR/DA before he lost the elections.
