The letter below, from 22 Democratic Senators, was sent to President Obama this afternoon.

The Senators wrote that they "would support a grant of deferred action" and other measures to grant relief to qualified DREAM students. We'll have more tomorrow, but wanted to post the letter once we saw it. America's Voice shares the view that the President has the executive authority to protect DREAMers.

As you can see, a broad spectrum of the Democratic caucus signed the letter including leadership and even more conservative Senators, like Florida's Bill Nelson, who is up for reelection in 2012

Sucks to see that there is only 22 Democratic Senators. Wish there were some bi-partisan support on this issue. 22 Senators isn't enough in my opinion.

On another point, don't know if granting a deferred action will help or hurt President Obama on his political campaign for 2012. Since this is such a controversial issue, I don't think he will do it until he get's reelected.

That letter dismissed all the arguments from the Obama administration that they can't grant deffered action to dreamers. Obama is being pushed into a corner here and i like it!!!

Quote:
The White House is urging lawmakers to back away from a campaign led by Hispanic Democrats to block deportations involving U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants, a move that risks antagonizing Latino voters crucial to President Barack Obama’s re-election.

The administration argues that it doesn’t have the legal authority to exempt certain immigrant categories from the law.
“With respect to the notion that I can just suspend deportations through executive order, that’s just not the case,” Obama said at a March 28 town hall sponsored by the Univision television network. “There are laws on the books that Congress has passed.”

“You don’t have to deport them, Mr. President, you can parole them in place,” Gutierrez said, previewing the argument he will make with Obama when they meet later this month to discuss immigration issues. “The goal is to say that the young people in the Dream Act should be paroled in place.”

It is time for Obama to spend some political capital on this issue.

The voters who are likely to be upset by this are not going to vote for Obama in the first place.

I honestly don't see anything happening for DA/CIR until after Obama gets re elected, then he might just fill his promises on CIR/DA. Who knows? That may all just be wishful thinking.

This letter would of been even more impressive if all the Dems' names that voted yes on DA last December would of been there as well.

I've said this before and I will say it again, this is not going to be easy, much energy and effort will have to come from every dreamer within the states to push this to the finish line, thanks much senator's who had the courage to stand up.

Obama can use Executive Order to grant temporary status relief for all Dreamers who qualify. Of course he can. It has been done by numerous brave Presidents. He should not get the Latino vote if he does not use his powers. My hope is that the communities who support Obama will pressure him to use Executive Order or lose the election.
