President Barack Obama is summoning two key senators to the Oval Office on Thursday for an update on immigration reform efforts — but one of them, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), thinks Obama should be the one giving the update.

Graham, less than thrilled at the notion of providing the equivalent of a book report to the headmaster in chief, said Obama’s lack of direction on immigration reform is hampering Graham’s efforts to recruit additional Republicans to the cause.

“At the end of the day, the president needs to step it up a little bit,” Graham told POLITICO on Tuesday. “One line in the State of the Union is not going to do it.”

That's nice. Now we just need to find more Republicans with that attitude and we are set!

I can't believe that it takes a Republican senator from SC to urge the Democratic White House for action on this bill. Even the minority whip voted yes on CIR in 2007, more than can be said for quite a few Dems. What an embarrassment. More like a tragedy, actually.

Interestingly from the new Newsweek article on this issues:

(As a side note, it's interesting to see Graham and Obama team up on immigration because last time around the issue strained their nascent relations, leaving Graham in particular with a sour taste over their encounter. Like Graham, Obama had joined the McCain-Kennedy group. It was one of the first times Graham had worked with the then-junior senator. The group had agreed that once the bill reached the floor, none of them would offer amendments, nor would they support amendments offered by other senators. But Obama reneged, offering an amendment that would strip out a temporary-worker program that organized labor hated. Graham was enraged and castigated Obama from the floor. Ted Kennedy dressed down the junior senator in the hallway. "The guy just folded like a cheap suit on immigration," Graham told me in 2008, adding he thought Obama was just in it for the photo op.)
