Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) may be working with the White House to craft an immigration reform proposal, but you wouldn't know it from his comments Sunday morning.

The South Carolina Republican had no kind words for the president's efforts on the topic, accusing him of ignoring immigration and paying lip service only for temporary political reasons.

Graham laughed off the president's claim that he's been "unwavering" in his support for immigration overhaul.

"This idea that the president has been unwavering on immigration doesn't really pass the smell test," Graham said on ABC's "This Week."

Graham, who has been invited to the Oval Office twice in recent weeks to discuss his work with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), said Obama's interest in the issue is only due to an upcoming march on Washington.

"A hastily called meeting Thursday because of a rally next weekend is not unwavering," he said. "This idea that this administration has been unwavering on immigration reform is just political spin and the people at the rally ought to know that."
Immigration reform proponents are planning a massive rally in Washington later this month. The rally is organized by Reform Immigration for America, a left of center group.

Graham even accused Obama of undermining the last attempt for immigration reform when he was in the Senate. The South Carolina Republican said Obama's proposal to sunset temporary worker provisions caused the fragile coalition supporting immigration reform to fall apart.

"He undercut the grand bargain," Graham said of Obama.

Schumer and Graham are set to unveil a framework for immigration overhaul that will serve as the basis for future legislation. Graham lamented that so far Obama hasn't offered a plan of his own.

"All you've done is talk about what we should do," he said. "Now is the time to lead."

I agree with Senator Graham in this article in its entirety. If immigration reform doesn't pass, then Reform for America's next project should be 'the Immigrant Independent Movement' and to hell with either party. People must vote their interests.

dtrt09: illegal people have no voice in decision making process. It's like black people in the earlier part of the 20th century, when they couldn't vote because they were kept ignorant/uneducated. Look at how long it took for black people to achieve some kind of progress in terms of equality. Obama will fail at everything he does because "the system" will never allow a black man to be a great president. He will go down in history as the worst president and we can wait 20 years to get another minority in such a powerful position. Stop blaming Obama.

I agree with Mr. Graham. So, far all he is done is lip service.

Graham is right, Obama does not really want to take on immigration reform. This is evident from his comments saying that he'd like to go forward with it, but that he wants to have bipartisan support first.

He didn't say that about health care reform. He never had bipartisan support for that, but he still pushed ahead with it. If he really wanted to get immigration reform done, he would push for it no matter what.

Given the political climate in Washington and the fact that it's an election year, there will definitely not be significant Republican support. By Obama saying he wants to go forward with immigration reform only with bipartisan support, he is essentially saying that he won't go forward with it at all.

What a failure of a president. I can only hope that Durbin wakes the fuck up and pushes for the DREAM Act as a stand-alone bill by summertime, or if the Democrats were really smart and cared about Hispanics, attach it to a must-pass bill. The Republicans have done it, why not the Democrats?

Do you remember that a law saying guns could be allowed in national parks was attached to the credit card reform bill that passed last year? One thing had nothing to do with the other, but the Republicans actually have balls and gets things done.

If the Democrats cannot get shit done, they deserve to be massacred this November. Thank God that worthless pansy Reid will most likely lose reelection.

Well, duh! No shit; don't you think we know we cannot vote? Do you think the activists that met with him Thursday were illegal immigrants???? Most of the activists were *Hispanic* activists. Hispanics have blended status familes; some of my siblings are citizens; some are residents (for now). I can't vote; but they will and they have made it very clear that if the Democrats don't man up on immigration as well as other things, it's bye bye. As do millions of mixed-status Asian families, and Caribbean families, and Muslim families. I do blame Obama; it's my opinion.

If you really look at it, Immigration is the only thing that keeps hispanics voting democrat. While i do genuinely believe that the Dems as a whole do see immigration as a must-do I can also say with certainty that the majority of the Republicans dont. It's always been like that. The Republicans know that the majority of the latinos have very conservative social views and they're going to stop at nothing to kill immigration reform and point at Obama and the Dems and say "see! They don't care about you hispanics like we do." I remember hearing some hispanic republican congressmen/congreswomen pointing fingers at the Dems in '07 blaming them for the failure of immigration reform when it was a known fact that the Republicans overwhelmingly voted against it.

It's a no brainer; CIR is dead, it has been ever since the economy tanked...I just wish Reid and the Dems would see this and just take it all with baby steps and at least pass the Dream act which in its current state could pass a vote in both the House and Senate. Too bad he's hardheaded and just wants to clump up everything for the sake of "simplicity".

but you can't honestly blame Obama. You can't also ask for papers or ask for legalization when you don't know the basics of how politics work in Washington. If we lived in a country where the executive could just wave his hand and decree stuff into law then yeah, blame Obama-but this is not so; we have three branches and of the three the legislature is the most inefficient. Don't blame the Dems as a whole who have been trying to pass health reform since last year, blame special interest groups who are doing everything to make sure Obama and the Dems fail, blame republican obstructionism, blame the media for not giving immigration the attention it deserves. So to assign all the blame solely on Obama is just ludicrous.
