AUSTIN -- One could call it Dream Act light.
A Republican member of the Texas House is gathering support for a nonbinding resolution urging the federal government to pass legislation that would offer undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship if they serve in the United States military.
The resolution would call on Congress to give undocumented immigrants, who arrived in the United States before the age of 16 and graduated from high school, a conditional green card to enlist in the military. Then, after four years of military service, they would be granted citizenship.
"Frankly, part of my thinking is this helps the Republican congressmen have a little bit more courage to take this on," said state Rep. Will Hartnett, R-Dallas.

If the state of Texas, a border state dominated by Republicans, can pass something like this, it will help them think harder about it."The resolution, which is making its way through the Texas House, comes when President Barack Obama called for immigration reform in El Paso on Tuesday and Democrats at the national level have reintroduced the Dream Act.

It has a sizable number of co-sponsors too.

I am joining the Air Force or the Navy if this passes . I would not join if you do not have a degree yet or they will put you on the front lines.

I"m thinking of joining the reserves or the coast guard if DA passes since that way all have a monthly income and a place to live with out worrying about the job market. I wanted to join the full military back when I was stupid. But now college has taught me a little better.

And you will find yourself in Afghanistan or Iraq since they are out of troops and are sending in reserves.

this is dumb.. not everyone wants to join the military.. especially if they have wife/kids or just want get educated. i would understand 2 years but doubling that is stupid... they are saying if you have made a life here already good for you but you cant get papers till you abandon your life and join the military for 4 years.. therefore not starting a real life till you are mid aged

I'll have a degree in Accounting when I graduate, and honestly, being in the air force or navy would look perfect with military experience, I would join if it passes.

The resolution still requires federal action correct? If so, this is still some freaking good news--especially coming from an Anglo-American Republican.

I guess Obama's speech did corner some Republicans.

Do any of you guys think DA could pass if combined with Ag Jobs and E-verify?
