Well, I just applied for SSN, so the next step is to get a DL. I don't really know the process or what I should do, and I'm kind of nervous to call the dmv and just sound like a complete idiot and embarrass myself. From what I understand, before I can get the actual DL, I need to get a beginner's permit, is that correct? (I'm 19 years old, but I've never had a DL). For the beginner's permit, is all I need to pass a written exam and vision test, or do I need to actually drive and prove myself?

In California, you take vision and written test. If you don't pass the vision test, they will give you a form to take it to your eye doctor so they can sign off and basically assure them that you can drive with corrected vision. You might need to get correction lenses. The written test is about 36 multiple choice questions that come from the DMV handbook. You need to miss 7 max in order to pass. Once you pass, they will give you the permit. The permit is to be used while under the supervision of a licensed driver, 25 years or older. Once you feel confident, you can schedule your driving test. The examiner will ask you about the car, where things are(emergency flashers, horn, hand signals etc) The examiner will then take you around the neighborhood through a defined course with stop signs, left turns, parallel parking etc. If you pass, they will print you a paper license. You should receive your card license within 2 weeks.

Process of obtaining a driver's license should be on the states DMV site.

How did she do that?! on the SC DMV site, it says you must hold the Beginner's Permit for 180 days before you can apply for a driver's license?
