This is happening in my home state. It even got the governor involved. She is hiding inside a church. She has lived here for 24 years.

Does anyone know what she did to end up having checking with ice every year?

An undocumented Connecticut mother of four has sought sanctuary inside a New Haven, CT, church to avoid being deported to Guatemala. Nury Chavarria has lived in the United States for 24 years and has checked in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement yearly, but this year she was instructed to return.

Chavarria entered the U.S. without the proper documentation when she was 19, according to WTNH News 8. Until this year Chavarria was allowed to remain in the country since she has never been arrested and pays taxes. At her last ICE meeting, Chavarria was ordered to buy a ticket back to Guatemala. ICE agents also fastened a GPS monitor on her ankle.

She was scheduled to fly back to Guatemala on Thursday, but instead of going to the airport she went to the Iglesia de dios Pentecostal Church. Chavarria’s lawyer, Sidd Sinha, confirmed her client’s decision to defy ICE orders.

In a statement to ABC News, an ICE spokesperson described Chavarria as an “ICE fugitive” after she “did not depart as instructed.”

“In 2010, the agency deferred her removal for one year on humanitarian grounds,” the statement read. “As a current exercise of discretion and after an exhaustive review of her case, the agency had allowed her to remain free from custody while finalizing her timely departure plans.”

Chavarria’s family held a press conference outside the church on Thursday. Her 9-year-old daughter, Haley, implored authorities to let her mother remain in the country. “She’s not a criminal. She has a positive attitude about everything. I want her to stay because I love her so much,” Haley said. “My message to President Trump is don’t separate my family.”

Democratic Governor Dan Malloy met with Chaverria on Thursday as well; he posted a photo of their meeting on Twitter without commenting specifically on her situation.

ICE agents are legally allowed to raid churches, however doing so would likely spark uproar. Department policy advises against raiding “sensitive locations” without prior approval from “the appropriate supervisory official.”

WTNH News 8 was able to interview Chaverria inside the church on Friday with her daughter Haley. Chaverria said she did not know how long she would stay at the church, but that she was relieved to be with her family for the time being.

“I am happy to be here with my daughter. I can see her and later my kids come to visit me,” Chaverria told WTNH News 8. “That’s a good thing for me, that’s the only way to keep my family together.”

She signed a voluntary departure order , like 19 years ago and did not leave. Automatically became an order of removal.

Like I most cases, she probably had no idea what she was signing. It does not make it right for her to be separated from her family. I can't imagine the pain her kids must be going through.

Nah, I disagree because this issue is entiry subjective. For example you can say if a parent was truly separated from their children then they would take them with them no matter what circumstance it's parental insticts. If you were a parent, why would you abandon your child regardless if the living conditions are good or not? It's not like they're forced to leave them alone.

So let me get this straight, you guys want sympathy from congress to avoid deportation but there is no sympathy for this mother of 4 who is most likely going to get deported and be separated from her family? Oh the irony! The mentality that some so called "dreamers" have here disgust me. So because you got yours screw the rest and let's deport everyone right? Hypocrites!

This mother has been in this country probably longer than any of us, has no criminal convictions, paid her taxes, and was contributing into the economy but somehow some people here think is ok for her to be deported and applaud her deportation? Maybe one day you'll be at the other end and know how it feels like to be separated from a loved one.

I'm not a DREAMer lol I'm a us citizen. Only reason I'm here is because I support the Dream act because it would benefit my girlfriend who was fucked over by her parents due to this shit and many of my close friends. I do not support amnesty to people who were willing to break the laws, just the dreamers, I'm sorry though.

And yes I do know what it feels like being separated from a loved one considering that my father was locked up for 5 years.

Whether your a dreamer or not believe in Karma buddy and let's hope you don't get separated from your girlfriend because then you'll have the same feeling this family is going through. Karma has a way of striking back whether you have papers or not. I can respect your opinion, but this about being passionate and having a heart. No one is saying hand out papers for everyone, all I'm saying is have a damn heart.

If she goes back, I'll go back with her and yes I have gone through the feeling that the family is going through because like I said my dad was locked up for 5 years when I was only 12.

(edit: I respect your opinion as well but to me, empathy and a respect for the law are not mutually exclusive, even if they conflict.)
