Hurd, R-San Antonio, is part of a working group of Republicans who met for the first time this week since being selected by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to help the GOP find solutions to vexing immigration matters.

“There are 800,000 young men and women who have only known America, and they should have legal status to stay here. I think this is something we can get done, and our little working group is working hard to mutually find solutions,” Hurd said.

Hurd said in an interview that he is intent on finding bipartisan solutions to the immigration matters in front of Congress. He said that Congress has not reached the point where a discharge petition is needed.

“My thing is, don’t tie my hands on what tools we can use to solve this problem,” he said. “I still think we can solve this with legislation through the legislative process.”

On Monday, three GOP senators offered their version of legislation to shield young immigrants from deportation, but some of its provisions could make it difficult to attract wide support.

Hurd said that the eight members of the working group appointed by Ryan, among them several House members known for hard line views on immigration, are seeking a mix of provisions that can yield legislation that will pass.

“These are the conversations we are having now. What does the final solution look like? What parts of border security, what part of internal enforcement, what part of immigration fixes need to be or can be included to have a solution? We’re going to be meeting until this thing is done,” he said.

I think more republicans will sign a discharge petition with democrats as a last ditch effort. Unfortunately the discharge petition now isn’t going to get a lot of republican support.

Just find a compromise within the bills we already have and get this shit done. I hope they don't try to create another bill.
