The Trump administration for the first time connected the Obama-era DACA program to the surge of children and families on the border, in new court documents filed Friday laying out in more expansive detail why the courts should invalidate DACA.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said taking a weak stance sent the wrong message to would-be migrants, and the government must cancel the DACA program to fix that.

“Considering the fact that tens of thousands of minor aliens have illegally crossed or been smuggling across our border in recent years and then have been released into the country owing to loopholes in our laws … it is critically important for DHS to project a message that leaves no doubt regarding the clear, consistent and transparent enforcement of the immigration laws against all classes and categories of aliens,” she wrote in a memo.

The document was meant to expand on the justification then-acting Secretary Elaine Duke gave last September when she announced a phaseout of the DACA program.

Several federal judges have ruled her phaseout decision wasn’t well-thought out, and used circular logic that relied on the fear of a legal defeat in the courts to scrap the program.

Those judges have put her phaseout on hold.

Ron Johnson: ‘We have been encouraging illegal immigration’

(CNN) — Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson said Sunday the laws and practices of the US have encouraged undocumented immigration to levels the nation cannot handle.

“We have been encouraging illegal immigration,” Johnson said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Johnson, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said decades of “well intentioned” decisions were responsible for surges in illegal border crossings over the years.

“We don’t have the capacity to handle all the unaccompanied children, all the family units that are now flooding our border because of a host of judicial decisions, legal precedent and laws,” Johnson said.

Johnson acknowledged in the interview that the US demand for drugs fueled instability in Central America and contributed to migration trends, but indicated repeatedly that policies like DACA incentivized people to enter the US illegally.

Because of our insatiable demand for drugs, yes public institutions in Central America have been destroyed, but they were destroyed prior to 2012 and DACA,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s call for the US to address “root causes” around undocumented immigration came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at keeping some families together at the border after his administration faced calls to stop separating children from parents.

with DACA making noise about it being canceled it basically sent a message saying that childhood arrivals are going to get legal eventually if they come illegally.

This is bad, because now the administration has to send a strong message invalidading this, which means there is a chance we could be screwed.
