Democratic leaders are urging President Trump to drop his proposal to spend $5 billion on a border wall and avoid a partial government shutdown, saying the proposal does not have enough votes to pass Congress

“This holiday season, the president knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate, and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement,” Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) said in a joint statement issued before their meeting with the president scheduled for 11:30 am Tuesday.

The leaders said Republicans, not Democrats, would get the blame for the shutdown because Trump is pushing the border wall proposal, which is well in excess of the $1.6 billion Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Committee agreed to earlier this year.

“Republicans still control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and they have the power to keep government open. Our country cannot afford a Trump Shutdown, especially at this time of economic uncertainty,” they said.

Pelosi and Schumer will urge Trump to accept a year-long stopgap funding measure for the Department of Homeland Security or a long-term stopgap measure for the remaining seven unfinished appropriations bills, according to a senior Democratic aide.

A yearlong stopgap, also known as a continuing resolution, would provide $1.3 billion for border fencing and barriers, the same amount that Congress appropriated for fiscal year 2018.

Republican leaders predict that Trump will reject that offer.

“I’d rather pass all seven,” said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), referring to the seven spending bills his panel has put together at higher funding levels for next year.

Schumer/Pelosi on mtg w/Trump Tues: Republicans still control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and they have the power to keep government open. Our country cannot afford a Trump Shutdown, especially at this time of economic uncertainty.

Schumer/Pelosi on Trump mtg Tues about gov't funding: This holiday season, the president knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate, and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement.

Both Schumer and Pelosi are constrained by their left flank heading into tomorrow’s meeting with Trump.

And neither are entertaining sweeping immigration deals they’ve dangled in the past. W @burgessev

Rep. Vela, whose district borders Mexico, is actively working to block Pelosi from becoming speaker. But he told me he trusts her much more than Schumer.

“You might as well call this the Schumer-Trump wall in my view,” Vela said, calling it a “New York City conspiracy”

As far as I am concerned, if we want action on our issue we need Trump to remain adamant on the Wall funding otherwise we are going to have to wait until 2020. My biggest fear is that deep down Trump wants to punt this to 2020 too (similar to how Dems want to punt immigration to 2020 for votes).

Freedom Caucus on wall funding:
This is our last chance to address illegal immigration before Democrats take over the House. Republicans in Congress must fulfill our promise to the American people by building President Trump’s wall, ending catch and release & securing our borders

I agree we need Trump standoff on thr border funding. It would be a great smack in Democrats’ face if Trump asks for daca solution somehow.

At this point this is indeed our final chance. I would be willing to accept a codification of DACA with permission to travel freely but it looks to me like Democrats are in a VERY STRONG position right now. All cards are against Trump right now...and to make matters worse the Russian cloud is darker then ever so he must be DESPERATE to get a win with the Wall. The optimistic part of me is hoping that Chucky and Nancy secretly are pushing for FULL Dream Act in exchange for the wall funding. Nobody knows whats going on behind the curtains. All I am saying is, it is not over yet.

If they give 1.3 billion to DHS for the next year CR, Democratic leaders Schumer and Pelosi will have given 2.6 BILLION in the last 15 months (since Sept 2017) to be used to deport, detain, and exclude immigrants.

Who here is calling this resisting non-existing wall?
Walls don't deport people.

Who's helping to fund them?
They still need a partner to give them the $$.

Think critically and accept that there are crooked politicians on both sides of the aisle.
