Schumer Says Shutdown Will 'Get Worse And Worse,' Dismisses Wall-For-DACA Deal
JANUARY 06, 2019 - 1:29 PM
CATEGORIES: Local News Politics
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Sen. Chuck Schumer says President Donald Trump is refusing to budge from his border wall demands as the government shutdown enters week three, and he said Democrats wouldn't consider a DACA-for-wall deal with the president to end the shutdown.

“The government shutdown will continue to get worse and worse,” the Senate minority leader said during a press conference at his Midtown office Sunday highlighting the everyday impact of the shutdown.

The number of federal workers in New York City not working because of the shutdown is around 17,000, according to Schumer, who said the impact is even bigger when taking into consideration the “families and the people they care about.”

“It’s causing large, large hardship,” the Democrat said.

Schumer said the only way out of the shutdown is either Trump concedes ground on the border wall funding issue or the president agrees to separate that issue from the overall funding plan.

“The bipartisan bills actually crafted by Republicans late last year -- sign them to open up the government, and then we can debate border security,” Schumer said. “We want border security; I am strong for border security.”

Putting to rest speculation, Schumer said Democrats would not consider giving Trump money for the wall if the president supported a plan legalizing undocumented immigrants currently protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

So far the president has showed no signs he’s willing to push off the border debate.

At a meeting this past Friday, Schumer said Trump threatened to continue the shutdown for months, even years.

“Everyone, Democrats and Republicans, were sort of aghast when he said it,” Schumer said.

Trump, meanwhile, said he doesn't expect anything to come out of a second day of negotiations between top administration officials and senior congressional staff trying to end the partial government shutdown now in its third week.

Democrats cannot mention DACA.

If the Shutdown continues for a few more weeks and people are unable to receive their tax refunds, you don't want millions of Americans angry at DACA recipients.

What have I been telling you guys all along? There isn't going to be a deal that includes us. Neither Trump nor the Democrats want a deal that includes us. Pray to God that the Supreme court does not end up taking the case. Otherwise, we are royally screwed.

House should pass DA bill on their end soon. Reopen gvnmt (independent of DHS). Send DA and potential other immigration measures to the Senate hash out.

NY establishment politicians are the worst- willing to throw anyone under the bus.

Ding ding ding.

As soon as Democrats mention Border-For-DACA... we lose.

Why? Because the whole debate shifts from "Trump is throwing a temper tantrum" to "Democrats are shutting down the government because they love illegals!!!111"
