This past Friday, July 3, dozens gathered at Sixth Street Community Center in the East Village for a night of music and food, but, more importantly, they came to support a scholarship fund set up to help undocumented Long Island students who want to attend college. By raising money for these students, the Hauppauge-based Jobs with Justice, who hosted the event, is assisting a group of young people that otherwise wouldn't have many options, although legislation like the DREAM Act aims to change that (more on the DREAM Act here).
The night of fun was organized by Charlene Obernauer, whose own band, Born in a Cent, was joined by others like R-TRONIKA and Last Internationale. Below is a slideshow of the many bands and people that came out Friday. The event was a success, but they could always use more assistance. And if you're a graduating high school student, or currently in college, you may be eligible for a scholarship from Jobs with Justice. If you'd like to download the scholarship application, click here.
