It looks like Schumer is open to the idea of border security triggers before legalization, but for how long ?
Quote:
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) decried Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) plan to curb illegal immigration on Monday saying that the Republican lawmaker’s initiative does not take a comprehensive approach.

“We believe our blueprint is even stronger than the Arizona senators’ proposal in stopping the flow of illegal immigrants because our plan both increases border security and prevents employers from hiring illegal immigrants,” said Schumer in a statement on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, McCain – a longtime advocate of including a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants as part of immigration reform – emphasized that border security must be the top priority now in trying to address illegal immigration concerns.

Schumer said that Democrats would be willing to negotiate with the Republicans on a bill “that requires completion of border security measures before any other measures take effect,” but he emphasized that the measure needs to stick with a comprehensive approach to ensure passage in both the House and the Senate.

“The only way to combat illegal immigration is through comprehensive reform because that is the only solution that can get through both the House and the Senate,” he said.”

I wonder why they don't just do it already. I am pretty sure that it was not, undocumented immigrants who were trying to get into the country to look for work, who killed that guy. I can bet you anything that it was drug smugglers who did this.

Nothing wrong with McCain's bill. As long as it precedes some sort of legalization. Why can't Schumer & Graham cooperate with McCain & Kyl and consolidate the whole thing? Go ahead, make the enforcement 1st priority even make it the only part that will go in effect the first year, legalization can come in second. In all honesty, I think by introducing their own bill, McCain and Kyl trying to tip off that they're still interested in some sort of reform. If only they could work all together!

For CIR opponents the border will never be secured enough. Enforcement 1st will never give a chance to any legalization.

The whole notion of enforcement "first" implies, in it self, there's something coming in second. Of course, those who have already made up their minds won't budge their position. But remember majority of population IS not ring wing extremists.

Exactly, which means that if this is a starting point, at the end of the day we could be left with nothing except a situation that makes it even harder to live and work in this country.

With enforcement first approach, the only thing coming in second is ATTRITION.

Whether people like it or not, enforcement will HAVE to come sooner or later. Question is will it be coupled with some sort of legalization. As long as they are not proposing to mass deport gestapo-style, nothing wrong with strengthening the border security. I say let them have it! The undocumented are in no position to "demand" anything. The ball is in their court. People should start to realize how ridiculous it sounds to ask the borders be less secure.
