Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, just popped out of a closed session of the Senate Armed Services Committee to reveal that the he had just scored a significant victory on his border security amendment that would mandate the President send 6,000 National Guardsmen to the US-Mexico border.
"Getting it through the...committee is very important as part of the Defense Authorzation bill...Over 80% of the American people support sending the Guard to the border and sooner or later Democrats will react to public opinion," McCain told Fox.
The authorization bill is widely considered to be a must-pass piece of legislation. The bill sets the spending blueprint for defense policy that is eventually funded through the annual appropriations process.

Anything attached to this bill stands a better chance of passing in the end, though it is certainly possible that the measure could eventually be dropped in conference with the House.

Why doesn't Durbin and our allies try to do the same with the dream act? McCain's border amendment failed when it came to the full senate for a vote, but see how much easier it was to get it passed in the committee.

Quote:
A Senate panel on Thursday agreed to an amendment authored by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to require the deployment of 6,000 National Guard Troops along the U.S.border with Mexico. Senate action occurred late in the afternoon on Thursday, May 27, 2010, during a closed-door markup in the Senate Committee on Armed Services of the Fiscal Year 2011 Department of Defense Authorization Act. Senator McCain is the Committee's Ranking Republican. The Committee went on to approve the draft Defense Authorization Bill by a vote of 18-10, readying the measure for full Senate consideration sometime in June or later.

Now he doesn't have to worry about getting 60 votes for his measure.

6,000 troops is not enough, lack of android technology, bigger fence needed etc, etc.

The 6,000 troops were McCains idea if he says that he is a dumb ass. I really wish they would have attached Dream Act or at Least AGJobs to this.

Apparently not according to this article.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is still holding out hope for a comprehensive reform package and even mentioned Graham’s name during a floor speech touting it.

Graham later chuckled at Schumer’s optimism.
“Sen. Schumer just on the floor said, ‘Me and Sen. Graham are working on comprehensive immigration reform,’ ” Graham said. “I just heard it for the first time.”

Schumer is still trying to string us along with this elusive talk of comprehensive immigration reform. The leadership should really come together and come up with a plan b because NO republican is willing to step up anytime soon to help pass a CIR bill.

Lol. I know this is a serious matter but I couldn't help but laugh at this. Lack of Android technology, lol.

You're right though. I'm sure they'll use any excuse they can.

Really, though, their only big excuse is "We should not reward lawbreakers." That's what it always comes down to.

I really do hope McCain wins. He may not be perfect, but we'd be better off with him than Hayworth. That dude is just straight up anti-immigrant. At least McCain could be swayed.
