About fucking time:

Quote:
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's disclosure that the Department of Justice will be filing a suit against Arizona's tough new immigration law is not being denied by either the White House or the Department of Justice itself.

In what appeared to be an unscripted admission, Clinton told Ecuadoran television on Thursday that DoJ, under the direction of the president, "will be bringing a lawsuit against" the Arizona act, which has been sharply criticized in Latin America.

The statement, first reported by the site Right Scoop, was the first overt declaration on the Justice Department's course of action. In late April, President Obama first announced his support for an investigation into Arizona's law, which would grant local law enforcement officials broader powers to detain suspected illegal immigrants. Since then, there have been hearings involving Attorney General Eric Holder but little in the way of explicit action.

Asked about Clinton's remarks, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs urged the Huffington Post to send queries to the DoJ. The department's spokesman, Matt Miller, replied with the following: "The department continues to review the law."

The non-denials are not, of course, confirmations of Clinton's statement. But it's hard to imagine that the Secretary of State is operating off of a different script than the rest of the administration. A suit, of course, would ramp up the debate over immigration reform, suggesting that the White House believes that either the law represents an egregious legal overreach or just smart politics.

Clinton comment on immigration law riles Ariz. gov

By AMANDA LEE MYERS (AP) – 38 minutes ago

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer says she's angry over comments by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that the Obama administration will sue the state over its new immigration law.

In a June 8 media interview in Ecuador that began circulating Thursday in the U.S., Clinton said President Barack Obama thinks the federal government should determine immigration policy and that the Justice Department "will be bringing a lawsuit against the act."

Justice spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler declined to say whether the department would sue and that "the department continues to review the law."

The department has been looking at the law for weeks, with an eye toward a possible court challenge.

It's unclear why Clinton made the comment since it's not her area. She couldn't be reached for comment.

Brewer said that she will fight this and has confidence that she will win. She was very disappointed that Obama did not do a follow up on the issue after he said that he would give her an answer in two weeks. Today is the end of that two week period.

See, Obama is all talk.

That's nothing new. A lawsuit had been expected right from the get-go the moment sb1070 was signed...organizations such as ACLU has threatened to sue before Brewer even thought of crossing her X's on the bill...and I think it was already in the court by the time that they met, so there was really no need to discuss anything regarding that. I don't know what else was she expecting. And also, Brewer's talk of her winning is almost on thin ice. I mean she has been having a hard time looking for an attorney to fight it with her. Even AZ's own attorney general...Terry Goddard....which is a democrat...who, BTW, is running for Governor against her this year....won't be considered, so she is looking from the outside to back her up.

So yeah...I'd really love to see how this all turns out.

This is nice.... but at the same time, it's like, they dont want to kick us out but they don't want us. Instead of a lawsuit, work to get immigration changed!

instead of freaking challenging the law, clinton should ask her boss (obama) to work hard to fix the law at the federal level.

Again... with the ecuadorian tv interview. WHERE did this interview take place?
Im not surprised Brewer would be fuming as she is, and would fight to the death to see how it turns out. Shes just waiting.
Cant wait to see how this turns out as well.

Obama needs to get off his ass and end this endless fighting over the law and sign an executive order halting deportations then everyone would shut up
