. With the GOP controlling all statewide offices, the top courts and nearly two-thirds of the seats in the Texas House and Senate, many of the tough measures that died in previous sessions are expected to have a much smoother route to passage.

State Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, joined Riddle in filing the Texas version of the Arizona-style proposal, which not only allows officers to inquire as to the immigration status of anyone they have “reasonable suspicion” about and arrest offenders for trespassing if they are undocumented but also gives immunity to the arresting officer and the state from any lawsuits that result.

State Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, who has pushed some of the strongest anti-immigration proposals in previous sessions, is expected to file at least one bill challenging birthright citizenship. he'll push to discontinue the 14th Amendment's guarantee of automatic citizenship for children born on U.S. soil. The measure would invite a lawsuit, but that's what he's hoping for. "That was the primary purpose of the bill, for someone to sue us in federal court, and let's resolve this issue once and for all," Berman told NPR in May.

Perry supports an end to any sanctuary city policies and criminal penalties for businesses that "knowingly hire" illegal immigrants but has said the Arizona immigration law is not right for Texas

POLICE CHECKS: HB 17 State Rep. Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball Allows police to check the immigration status of Texans on “reasonable suspicion” and arrest those who are illegal for violating criminal trespassing laws. State Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, filed a companion bill in the Senate that gives arresting officers immunity from resultiing lawsuits.

BUSINESS SANCTIONS: HB 197 State Rep. Burt Solomons, R-Carrollton Requires proof of citizenship to work in Texas and makes it a Class A misdemeanor to hire illegal immigrants.
E-VERIFY: SB 84 State Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville Requires Texas businesses to access the federal database that employers can use to screen the immigration status of potential hires.

DRIVER'S LICENSES: HB 177
State Rep. Jim Jackson, R-Carrollton Requires proof of citizenship in order to get any occupational license, driver’s license or official Texas ID cards.

ENGLISH ONLY: HB 81 State Rep. Dan Flynn, R-Van
Prohibits state agencies from using any public money to print non-English documents or signs.

Your right it would be a hot issue and it would advance the debate in congress, But It would be a living hell for the undocumented living in TX.

Unless they Sue the state just as they sued Arizona. Now that the Repubs are governing they can't say that the Federal Gov. is not doing their job while they block anything from getting done. They used to get away with it when they where in the minority.

They can no longer blame the Democrats for their inaction! Now they're in a compromising position and they have two options A) Deal with it or B) Keep doing the same thing and hope that Latinos and independents don't notice.

The odds are they will most likely do everything they can to avoid talking about the issue since it won't benefit them in 2012.

On the flip-side, GOPS (and Dems) know that the "general public" doesn't care or have the slightest idea of minority/majority/filibuster/etc in Congress. Whoever is in White House = Whoever passed the Bill to them.

Knowing this, GOP is not likely to pursue pro-Immigration reform. But who the fuck knows.
