Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) said on Thursday he absolutely will vote for the DREAM Act. That should be of little surprise since he's co-sponsored several versions of the immigration legislation.

But earlier this week, Lugar's backing began to waver. That caused some consternation among DREAM Act advocates since Lugar had been the only definite GOP "yes" vote.

"He supports [the] Dream Act but doesn't like all the political games being played over it," Lugar spokesman Mark Helmke said in an e-mail Monday. "He is considering his options."

After Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid delayed a test vote on the bill Thursday, Lugar said he had been prepared to vote "yes." And he indicated he'll support the bill when Reid brings it up again later this month.

"I was going to support cloture this morning, and it was whisked away," Lugar said. Why? "It's beyond my pay grade. Harry gets to decide what he wants to vote on and what he doesn't.

I added Lugar to my call/fax list when I heard news that he might not support the DA. I think I'll fax him one last letter expressing my deepest gratitude for his dedication. He is an admirable man. Too bad there aren't many Republicans like him in the Senate.

I called his office and his staffers were hesitant to provide his official decision, so indicates we are still in the run for this, [I.E. nobody knows how a senator would vote, not even their staffer's

It means that nobody can know with 100% certainty how a senator would cast his vote, I sounded out one of Lugar's staffer when I inquired whether Lugar would vote to support D.A., the staffer gave a very politcally answer, something along the lines, he supports the legislation and has in the past-co-sponsored, but never answered whether he would vote for the measure.
