Obama Vows to Bring Up Immigration Reform Again
Published : Wednesday, 20 Apr 2011, 10:05 PM CDT

FOX News

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama hosted a meeting on immigration reform at the White House Tuesday, signaling he is taking steps to get the issue moving again.

The president met with a bipartisan group of faith, business, law enforcement, and former and current officials to discuss the topic. Attendees included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, Former Bush administration Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and former Florida Republican Senator Mel Martinez.

Prior to the meeting, the White House said the participants would be discussing "the importance of fixing our nation's broken immigration system to meet our 21st century economic and national security needs so that America can win the future."

Obama brought the topic of immigration up during an interview with local Texas affiliate WFAA-TV Monday night.

"The question is going to be, are we going to be able to find some Republicans who can partner with me and others to get this done once and for all instead of using it as a political football," he told WFAA.

Last month, the president sent a warning to Republican lawmakers, especially on how immigration will have an impact in the voting booth.

"[P]erhaps some of my Republican friends are gonna start recognizing, if they looked at the last census, that they are gonna have a very hard time winning any elections if they continue to deliberately target anti-immigration sentiment," the president said in an interview with CNN en Espanol.

The president tried to push for immigration reform in his first two years in office, but was unable to get anything passed. Former President George W. Bush also tried for reform, but was unable to get a bill through Congress.
Obama said one of the biggest disappointments his two years in office was not passing the DREAM Act, which allows children of illegal immigrants who attend college or join the military to gain citizenship. It failed a vote just before Christmas and Obama has since vowed to bring up the issue again.

President Obama-- you pushed for immigration reform? you bloody liar. You are the one using this issue as political football. In regards to your tip to Republicans on the 2012 election, take your own advice.

You can pass whatever boarder bill that Republican want, but it's not going to help CIR.

I hate to be positive about this but we really have no choice but to support this guy. Republicans sure isn't going to do anything about this. Romney most likely won't support us since he was opposed to any path to legalization when he ran in 08'.
I LOATHE to say it but we have no one but him.
Pass Mcain and and Kyl's border protection plan. I think it's going to sway a little bit more votes for the DA, and that's all we need.

This is not what I mean. I am saying that if we give republican everything for nothing, then CIR will lose because we don't have any card in our hand to play. If they want border bills, OK no problem, but we need to get something in return.
