He said he was counting on religious and community leaders to drive members of Congress to take the lead on crafting an immigration bill. ( That has been his game plan all along, he just wants to sit back and do nothing..no heavy lifting for him)“That means changing minds [and] changing votes, one at a time,” he said of the uphill battle a comprehensive bill faces on Capitol Hill.
“I know there are some folks who think I should bypass Congress. I can’t.( He won't, he thinks we are stupid)

“But what I can do is sign a law. And what you can do is champion a law. What we can do together is make comprehensive immigration reform the law of the land,” Obama said.
Obama's own head of USCIS, immigration experts, immigration lawyers, senators and congressmen have all confirmed that Obama has the power to halt the deportation of Dreamers through executive action, yet he claims to can't.
Quote:
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) spoke earlier in the morning at the prayer breakfast, telling attendees he is “optimistic” Congress will pass an immigration reform bill before the 2012 elections.
Schumer said he is committed to working with Republican lawmakers to reach a bipartisan agreement that would reform the country’s immigration system.
“As head of the Immigration subcommittee who believes passionately in this issue, I remain optimistic that we can pass immigration reform during this Congress,” said Schumer, who leads the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security.
I don't even have the words to express my anger at this Idiot. This is the guy who allowed Lindsey graham to string us along since 2008.

Obama is a lying, piece of....poo. I do not believe in politics anymore; it's a bunch of corruption. Now I'm beginning to understand why some Moderate Republicans voted against the Dream Act because it's true that the Democrats are using it for political purposes rather than initiating change.

The answer is simple he can't risk alienating any voes. If he's ever going to use his powers it's going to be after the elections..

I completely understand your anger. Obama is making himself look bad with his rhetoric and actions. He says that he does not have any powers to halt deportations; however, he is willing to support and implement a dumb ass program that is not fulfilling its objective of deporting undocumented people with a history of serious crimes. His actions infuriate me. If he really wants to help out industrious undocumented people of good moral character, suspend Secure Communities, halt deportations, and get a legislation moving on CIR.

Let's see what happens. If Obama and Schummer do some heavy lifting, it is possible that something can get done. There are about 11 to 12 million undocumented people in the US. No one is going anywhere. Also, 11 to 12 million people are not going to be deported. Things are hard with, for example, the Secure Communities program; however, the Obama administration struggles to deport over 300,000 people a year . . .

Well, if Republicans cared about the latino vote, they would try to do something to help us out. Republicans are not any better. F U Marco Rubio. This SOB swears like his family did everything the legal way to come to this country. As I recall, his relatives left Cuba on a F***en boat and WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO LEGALIZE THEMSELVES THROUGH A LAW. They didn't apply from Cuba and waited patiently to become legal.

Oh my God, what an idiotic topic.

The line between "can't" and "won't" is virtually nonexistent when the possible ramifications of such action completely outweigh the benefits.

It's like me saying that I can possibly visit my home country by first sneaking across the border to Canada, taking a plane back, return to Canada and then sneak back in, without anyone noticing. However, saying that one can theoretically do such thing but simply doesn't and it is one's personal choice , borders on irrational.

If the president were to ever overrule Congress is such an open way, the impeachment of the president for even the smallest of improper acts (whether past or future) would soon follow, simply to make a point. The constitutional amendment to Article II sect I would probably be next, since I see no reason why the legislative branch, whether state or federal, would allow the executive one to limit it function to a practical minimum. I can just see the executive branch decimating itself, in order to pass the Dream Act.

Hahaha. Silly man, no one is asking you to "bypass" Congress - nice play of words there - because what you are being asked to do is exercise discretion which is entirely at your sole disposal. You don't have to write a law. Prosecutorial and enforcement discretion would only affect those in the judicial system - eg. people caught up in deportation and removal proceedings - not the undocumented population at large.

Your justice department is already doing this for the gaycommunity. DADT hasn't been repealed by Congress; you are simply refusing to act on it. The "bypass" Congress argument is simply legalese being thrown out there to put words in people's mouths and so the phrase will become common speak in the country- as in "Comprehensive immigration reform"- which now means any change to any aspect of immigration law and enforcement.
