WASHINGTON — Tired of being viewed as an "expendable voting population," some Latinos in Colorado are pressuring President Barack Obama to push for meaningful action on immigration reform and the DREAM Act.

Chicano activist and decades-long north Denver resident Ricardo Martinez walked precincts for Obama in 2008, but at the dawn of another presidential election cycle, he said he is tired of "empty promises."

"When the elections come around, they always come courting us, and this is proving to be no different," said Martinez, who co-founded the nonprofit advocacy group Padres Unidos. "Did Obama put as much effort in the time to pass the DREAM Act? I didn't see him. Was he out there, twisting arms? I didn't see that. Was he out there stomping around? I didn't see that. All we see is that we're an expendable voting population."

A recent campaign e-mail shows a smiling Obama saying, "I want to sign the DREAM Act into law, but I need your help to do the hard work of changing minds and changing votes, one at a time."

The ad then asks for a campaign contribution.

The e-mail so infuriated the small but growing voting bloc that Latinos are holding rallies in a couple of weeks in front of Democratic headquarters across the country — including Denver.

Latino youth groups will also send a letter to Obama for America, asking the campaign to take the ad down.

"He shouldn't be using the suffering and pain of people who are at risk for deportation for fundraising for his campaign," said Leidy Robledo, 20, a youth organizer for Jovenes Unidos. "He says he supports the DREAM Act, but he didn't do enough. There were key votes within his party that if they would have voted yes, the DREAM Act could have passed."

Obama for America spokeswoman Ofelia Casillas said the president "has been a longtime supporter of the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform. Many Obama for America supporters are organizing in their communities to promote these initiatives."

Support from Peña

Former Denver Mayor and Clinton Cabinet member Federico Peña is already working the Colorado Latino vote on behalf of the president. He recently held a meeting with a group of Colorado business leaders where he said he "talked very candidly about the need for the business community to stand up and get involved."

Peña said the administration needs to do a better job of giving Latinos — particularly young Latinos — a sense of everything the president has done for their community.

"Compared to presidents of the past, I don't know another president who has done more on this than Barack Obama," Peña said. "It's largely a messaging issue."

There are an estimated 1 million Latinos in Colorado, or about 20 percent of the state's population. About one in eight eligible voters in the state are Latinos, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. And much of the voting bloc's power — at least in Colorado — are young voters. Thirty percent of those eligible to vote are between the ages of 18 to 29.

But it is not as if they will wander over to the Republicans, said Robert Lang, a director of Brookings Mountain West at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

"They may not be as fired up as they were in 2008," he said. "But I would think the people who stopped the American DREAM Act may also be in for some pain in the next election."

Under Obama, deportations are on pace to double this year compared with 2007. The oft-touted DREAM Act was five votes shy in a December vote in the Senate and now has very little chance of passing a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

In the past two years, Obama strengthened the manpower along the border and has increased deportations from 291,060 in 2007 to 250,818 through May in 2011 alone.

Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, a former Denver Public Schools superintendent, was among a group of senators who sent a letter to the president this spring urging the administration to halt deportations of young people, or "dreamers," who would qualify for the DREAM Act, if it had passed.

"My country"

These are young adults like 20-year-old Aurora resident Jerardo, who arrived in the U.S. before they were 15, completed high school and have no criminal record.

Jerardo, whose last name is not being used because he is an illegal immigrant, was pulled over last year because the light was burned out over his back license plate. He was taken to jail and reported to immigration officials, when officers discovered he was here without citizenship documentation.

He is amid deportation proceedings and has hired a lawyer. Jerardo is the only person in his immediate family who is not a citizen or permanent resident.

Two years ago, Jerardo said he organized for Obama. Then a fresh high school graduate, he knew the DREAM Act would help him go to college, where he hoped to study automotive engineering.

"When I listened to him do his debates, he (Obama) did inspire me," Jerardo said. "In a way, I'm still optimistic. I always have my hopes up that someone will take some action to change this broken system. . . . I want to have the opportunity to give back to my country."

Proves my beliefs about Obama. What a disappointing dickhead. I hope he ends up being a one-term president.

Obama needs to push for CIR--Republican controlled house or not. He is likely to win re-election, but predicting the make-up congress is difficult. We don't know if the status quo will continue. We don't know if Republicans will gain more seats in the Senate. We don't know if Republicans will control both chambers by then. Who knows what will happen. Hence, he cannot leave us in limbo with the hope that his party will regain control of congress by 2012. He needs to act now. We are F***en tired of waiting!

What exactly has the President done for the undocumented community so far? You won't hear Obama talking about immigration again until a few months before the 2012 elections lol. He had all these meeting with democrats and "latino leaders", yet he hasn't had ONE meeting with republicans in congress to push them to compromise.

You're forgetting his major meeting with super star Eva Longoria. After all, she's the one who's going to introduce the bill in Congress and vote on it.
