Southern Baptist leader wants ‘clean’ DREAM Act for illegal immigrants who came as children

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Southern Baptist Convention leader says the group’s policy arm supports a “clean” version of the so-called DREAM Act.

The proposed law would allow illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to earn legal status, either by going to college or serving in the military.

Richard Land, president of the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, made the statement in a Monday letter to U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and John Cornyn of Texas. Both serve on the senate’s subcommittee on immigration.

Land wrote that his commission could support the DREAM Act, with conditions. They include a provision that would preclude those young adults granted legal status from using it to help their relatives gain legal status or enter the country.

In one way it's bad because it creates second class citizens, which I think isn't fair. We've worked as hard as everyone else, if not harder. With that being said it would be at least 10 years before we could even petition our own parents. And to be honest my parents don't really care about their papers anymore. So I say, include it?? What do you guys think??

My parents are around 55 years old. Lets say after ten years of waiting, I can START to apply for citizenship, which will probably take 1 or 2 years. After I become a citizen and want to petition my parents, they have to go back to their country of birth and serve a 10 years ban and start the process of coming to U.S. which is not guaranteed. How old will they be when they finally get their paper?

See that's what I mean, but what If you fall in love with a girl who just so happens to be undocumented?? And was unfortunate enough to not qualify for the DREAM act? What then?

The girl wouldn't be a relative so it's all good, i'm thinking... I'm in favor of this.. At this point it's a great idea.. Many of our parents already have U.S Citizen children anyways..

Citizenship would benefit us way more then it would our parents there live's are already set guys.. Nothing would change for them other then maybe traveling to the home country that's it!!

I say do it!

Actually parents fall into the 'immediate relative' category of immigrants who are forgiven the 10-year ban for being an overstay.

But anyway... I think it's 10 years of special-residency status and then 5 years of LPR status before you can apply for citizenship. 15 years to wait to legalize your parents is a looong time.

Many parents are EWI. They have to return to their country of birth to fix their paper.

What happens if one joins the military?? Bush signed a law that expedites citizenship for members of the Armed Forces. Is this a potential loophole?? Because being in the military and not being a U.S citizen sucks. You get excluded from the best jobs and possibly overseas travel.

this is an excellent idea. I'm sure that the majority of Dreamer's parents would approve.

My parents don't really give a damn. They work in the private sector. They want the DREAM Act to pass and are willing to wait for CIR if the 'clean' DA were to pass first.

Guys, this article means that we really need to pressure our champ, Durbin, to improve the way the DA is written, urging him to listen to the advice from these pious leaders and the speakers who offered ideas on how to better the DA at the Senate hearing. If Durbin were to do this and combine the DA with an enforecement measure, I am certain the DA would have a high likelihood of becoming a reality this year.
