Washington Post columnist George Will had a few suggestions for dealing with America’s immigration problem on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday, but said before anything can be done to deal with the illegal immigrants residing in America, America’s borders must be secured.

“The first thing you have to do is secure the border,” Will said. “A secure border is not a weird aspiration – it’s an essential attribute out of national sovereignty. Once you’ve do that, and the American people think you’ve done it – they’re not xenophobic, they’re not anti-immigrant. They just say let’s establish order and then we’ll come to terms with this.” (Will: Iowa showdown hinges on Perry, Huntsman announcement ‘had a whiff of moral arrogance’)

One thing he said that wasn’t feasible was deporting the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants from the United States.

“Then you can tell them the following: Suppose there are 11 million – we don’t know within a million,” Will said. “Let’s suppose there’s 11 million illegal immigrants here. I did the arithmetic. To deport them would require not just police measures we’d never tolerate. The majority of them have been here five years or more. They’ve had children here. Their children are citizens. But to depart them would require a line of buses bumper-to-bumper extending from San Diego to Alaska. Not going to happen. And soon as people come to terms with that, then we get on to settling it.”

Later in the online “Green Room” segment, he explained something would have to be done if these immigrants were to remain in the country and suggested the DREAM Act might be the only solution.

“If we are going to import as we are doing, a portion of Mexico’s poverty, and if we’re going to avoid having a permanent submerged underclass, then we have to do something to put these people on the ladders of upper mobility in this country and the DREAM Act may be part of that,” he said. “What offends some people is they say it’s rewarding illegal behavior. Well they have to make a choice.”

This really makes me angry. Perhaps, US borders are all ready "secure," but Republicans are using the secure-our-borders rhetoric to create Xenophobia and slam immigration reform proposals introduced by Democrats. I think what Republicans really want deep down inside is to receive all the credit for passing immigration reform. They want to "pick up the ball."

Also, screw Will. Can't this idiot realize that securing the border first will not solve the problem. What in the hell are legislators going to do with 11 to 12 million people whose lives and dreams are in limbo while legislators aim to take their sweet time to secure the border?????????????????

Republicans can at least give us work permits while they aim to secure the border.

We don't need work permit if it's not path to citizenship. Back in 90's they used to give out whitecard you can use for work in US and travel to your country, but after few yrs they discontinued renew it and everyone who had whitecard they got automatic deportaion. So do not ask anything less then path to citizenship even if it take 20 yrs to become citizen.

All I am saying is that Republicans can at least give us a means to sustain ourselves while they try to spend their sweet time in "securing the border." Then they could grant us path to legalization once the border is secured. That's one option they could choose instead of aiming to secure the border first, leaving us in limbo and with little access to jobs.

Yaapp I see what you saying, but you know we can not trust repubs. Who knows they might not even talk abt it after you gave them what they want. We have to keep our wapon safe untill they give us path to citizenship. Also they'll have 6 yrs to secure borders untill we start applyig for greencard.

the thing is that the vocal minority of idiots that are the far right will never believe the borders are secure and thus influence the whole right wing with their idiocy. You can build a 100ft double wall with a moat in it with piranhas and sharks and alligators...and the mothereffers will still have the audacity to say that the freaking border is still not secure. These racist morons wont rest until every brownie is out of plain sight so they can be "safe" again and enjoy the "good ol' days".

The border isn't secure though, saying it is doesn't make it secure
