One of two bills that make up what’s referred to as the California Dream Act is now on its way to the Senate floor. The proposed legislation would allow undocumented college students to apply for and receive scholarships that don’t come from state funds.

According to the office of sponsor Gil Cedillo, a Democratic Assembly member from Los Angeles, the bill known as AB 130 cleared the Senate Appropriations Committee today 5-3; a floor vote is expected Thursday.

A more contentious companion bill known as AB 131 was put in suspense, with a hearing deadline set for late August. AB 131 would allow undocumented students who meet in-state tuition requirements, as allowed by California law, to receive publicly funded financial aid at state colleges and universities, including Cal Grants. Here are excerpts from synopses of both bills:

Not sure how this got suspended and what this means, but right now is the time to call CA senators!!!

It seems that AB 131 is in the sh!tter considering it will reach the governor's desk separately. We all know politicians lie, and I can't imagine Brown making good on his promise after having won the election. We need this bill. Private scholarship is meaningless as we already qualify for them.

We need this bill out of suspension and on Brown's desk together with the AB130. We need to make calls to CA senators listed on that website.

Um...I wasn't aware i was making threads on getting hot chicks and how would you know i haven't called yet? Naming yourself "Harvard" doesn't give you the right to be a snooty d*ck.

The deadline is August 26. If it is not taken out of suspension by that deadline the bill will be dead.

What worries me is not that it will be vetoed by GOV. Brown, What I'm worried about is that it won't get out of suspension and it will be killed on Committee.

Call the Senate Appropriations Committee and thank them for getting AB130 onto Senate Floor ... most importantly, URGE them to get AB131 out of suspense and onto the Senate Floor.

Kehoe: (916) 651-4039
Pavley: (916) 651-4023
Price: (916) 651-4026
Lieu: (916) 651-4028
Steinberg: (916) 651-4006
Alquist: (916) 651-4013

CALL IN SCRIPT:

-Hello my name is ________________, and I want to thank Senator _______________ (your CA State Senator) for standing up for equal opportunity and access to education by voting YES on AB 130 within the Senate Appropriations hearing. I ask that they continue to insist that AB 131 be taken out of suspense to ensure that BOTH AB 130 AND AB 131 reach the Senate Floor and ultimately the Governor's desk. Thank you.
