09/23/2011: Two House Congressmen Including Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas Introduced "Legal" Immigration Reform Bill

Rep. Jason Chaffetz from Utah and Rep. Lamar Smith introduced H.R.3012 yesterday to eliminate the per-country numerical limitation for employment-based immigrants, to increase the per-country numerical limitation for family-sponsored immigrants, and other changes. This appears to be a good gesture for these legislators to highlight their opposition to immigration reform legalizing undocumented aliens but to welcome legal immigrants. Read Rep. Chaffetz release of the information. This bill is likely to face stiff controversy and opposition in both chambers of the nation's legislature. This Congressman has been closely following and supporting Rep. Lamar Smith's recent immigration bills, including the Legal Workforce Act and American Specialty Agriculture Act. Its selfish but this bill is not what we want. It hurts our cause. The end story will be "well we taught those illegals a lesson and we worked on immigration". This shouldnt pass, it shouldnt even be discussed. Lamar Smith is just trying to undercut the issue and bring back the immigrant base to his party line. If this passes no immigration reform will occur till the end of the next presidents term.

Yea, I'm with you that's why I asked someone to explain what the bill is about. I don't think this is good at all.

This Bill * Doesnt increase family-sponsored and employment-based preference visa numbers. It just re-arranges it on first come first serve basis.

Under current laws People from India/china/Phillipines/Mexico might get Visas after 10+ years of waiting while people from Finland and Zambia might get theirs in 4 months.

This bill says visas should be awarded on first come first serve.

He's merely saying to give everyone equal opportunity to the 140K visa pool and not give preference to one country over another so the waiting times between counties won't be so far apart
