D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray signed an executive order Wednesday barring cops and city agencies from asking people about their immigration status - a move in sharp contrast to states such as Alabama and Georgia that have recently ramped up their illegal immigration laws.

Gray said he signed the measure to make it clear that immigration enforcement is a matter for the federal government and not the district, WTOP reported. The order also mandates that D.C. police will not hold anyone for longer than 48 hours unless federal agencies have a court order.

“We’re not going to be instruments of federal law when it comes to immigration status,” Gray said. “If there are steps we need to take beyond this, then we will consider those at that point.”

D.C. police will not stop sending all fingerprints to the FBI from those arrested for serious crimes, WTOP said. The FBI then sends that data to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is in charge of deportations.

The order states that “no person shall be detained solely on the belief that he or she is not present legally in the United States or that he or she has committed a civil immigration violation.” Enforcement of U.S. immigration law, the order says, is the “responsibility of federal immigration officials.”

Out of curiosity, whats wrong with the other areas in DC? I'm from CT and I have never been there, that's why I'm asking.

Extremely large numbers of a certain group of people who tend to commit many crimes, lol. I won't elaborate out of political correctness.

The city is highly divided just like every other state around the country. Don't get me wrong, I don't think DC is in anyway any dangerous. In fact, I think it is very safe, but then again I never really ventured out in areas I wasn't comfortable with.

Come on, have you ever heard of Marion Barry? The guy got caught smoking crack ON VIDEO, and they still reelected him over and over! If that doesn't tell you about those 'other areas' I don't know what will
