By 2013, states will have little choice but to comply with the Obama administration’s controversial Secure Communities immigration program, which collects and shares information about a person’s immigration status when they’re fingerprinted in a local jail
A week old but still a good read.

The biometric ID thing is actually a National Identity Bureau - I found info on this back in 2009 and it has now disappeared from the same sites where I found it. Absolutely no reference to it whatsoever.
,
Secure Communities is being used for it because undocumented immigrants have fewer rights, and once in custody, getting their biometric and biographical information is easy peasy. They have been using the data collected by SComm to test the National Identity Bureau. It is supposed to be modeled after Facebook - each individual present in the country, citizen, LPR or otherwise will be there - along with their family members info, address, PHOTO and digital prints. Each individual and branching family tree then will be linked to municipalities, cities, states and the Federal government. DHS plans to force states to share DMV and StateID files to be "interoperable" (code work for mandatory sharing) with DHS and the FBI. Just like SComm. I supposed if you are not a criminal and your identity is your own, you'd not have a problem. But the overreach of power and the potential for abuse is endless. When I read it the first thing that came to mind was the Gestapo.

Wtf is this country coming to... I'm getting the hell out of here. I'm starting to see how under the guise of "freedom" and "patriotism" this country has managed to keep slavery going.

Completely agree, once I went on a trip to Fermi lab and I was denied entry because I did not have a driver's license. It fucking blows. I am having the same problem with getting into facilities like manufacturing plants too. It sucks because it is related to my job.
