[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced today that he will chair the first-ever Senate hearing on the DREAM Act next Tuesday, June 28th, at 10:00 am ET. The hearing will be in room 226, of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
*
“I’ve been working on the DREAM Act for over ten years,” Durbin said. “In that time, it’s been reported out of committee by a large bipartisan margin, passed the House of Representatives, and received a bipartisan majority vote in the Senate, only to fall because of a filibuster. I’ll convene the first-ever Senate hearing on this bill next week to discuss how the DREAM Act will make our country stronger by giving undocumented students a chance to earn legal status if they came here as children, are long-term U.S. residents, have good moral character, and complete two years of college or military service in good standing.”
*
Durbin will chair the hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security. The hearing will be webcast live on the Judicary Committee website.
*
Witnesses will be announced at a later date.

This is the way to go. Good strategy. It addresses Republicans' argument that the bill is not seriously considered and is only done for political gain. What do all of you think?

The membership in the subcommittee is six Democrats to five Republicans. They are very influential on the issue. Notice that Senator Grassely, who presented the Federal E-verify proposal a week or a few weeks ago,is in the subcommittee:

Democratic Members
Chuck Schumer, New York (Chairman)
Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont
Dianne Feinstein, California
Dick Durbin, Illinois
Al Franken, Minnesota
Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut

Republican Members
John Cornyn, Texas (Ranking Member)
Chuck Grassley, Iowa
Orrin Hatch, Utah
Jon Kyl, Arizona
Jeff Sessions, Alabama

Guys, this hearing is going to be intriguing. Maybe, Durbin might suggest the combination of the DREAM Act and E-verify at this stage. It's a possibility.

I also think that is the stage where Durbin should clarify or address Sessions' concerns about "other" undocumented people using fake diplomas/documents to benefit from the act.

I agree. Again, guys Durbin's move shows that advancing the act is a serious issue that needs to get resolved and is not only done for political gain. Democrats should take the time to respond to any concerns that Republicans might have on this piece of legislation.
