WASHINGTON (AP) — Just three week after the Obama administration started accepting applications from young illegal immigrants seeking to avoid deportation and get a work permit, the government already has approved some of the roughly 72,000 applications the government has received.

The Homeland Security Department said Tuesday that a small group of applications has been approved and those immigrants are being notified this week about the decision. The department did not say how many applications had been approved.

The first wave of approvals comes months head of DHS' own internal estimates of how long the application process for the administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program could take — and less than 60 days before the Nov. 6 elections. According to an internal DHS document obtained by The Associated Press, the department's Citizenship and Immigration Services had estimated that each application could take several months to be completed.

"Following a thorough, individualized case review, USCIS has now begun notifying individuals of the determination on their deferral requests," DHS spokesman Peter Boogaard said in a statement. He said about 72,000 applications have been received since the program's Aug. 15 start.

I think that should be left to the dreamer.

i think that regardless of the encouragement most of us do to help out fellow dreamers... the FEAR of being deported still lingers. Especially at this time of year... But after November elections... If Obama wins there will be a huge wave of new applicants. If Romney wins, well.......... N/A

lol

I'm confused this article says 72,000 applied, but there was another article on the forum that projected the numbers at 40,000. Which one is accurate?

lol! Well the low number of dreamers who have applied thus far is probably what contributed to the fast processing rate we've been experiencing. On the down side, critics may say that the money it took to hire all the staff, in addition to other costs, is not being met with the number of applicants that was expected.

Glad to read these awesome news!

72,000 seems like a very low number of applications, though. I really hope more DREAMers take advantage of this great opportunity.

your comment is ignorant, why even post it if you're going to have a negative attitude about peoples responses.

I have started to notice a trend on here. When people post legitimate questions to legitimate problems or give their interpretation of such articles they are met with ineffective and pointless comments such as yours. Why even make comments that (1) don't address the topic at hand; (2) are not helpful to the issue.

Fl_Dreamer I apologize for my burst of frustration I now realize what you were referring too.

However, my second comment about the trend on DAP remains.
