McCain urges immigration reform, leaving abortion 'alone'
By TIM MAK |
11/25/12 9:50 AM EST

Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Sunday the GOP needs to embrace a bigger tent and immigration reform - and leave abortion "alone” in the wake of the disappointing 2012 presidential elections.

“We have to have a bigger tent. No doubt about it. And obviously we have to do immigration reform,” McCain said on “Fox News Sunday.” “There is no doubt whatsoever that the demographics are not on our side.”

The Arizona senator added that the GOP needed to have a more proactive conversation about the policies it supports.

“We are going to give a much more positive agenda. It can’t be just being against the Democrats… You’ve got to be for things, and we have to give them something like the ‘Contract for America,’” he said.

While he was proud of his personal pro-life message, McCain said “as far as young women are concerned, I don’t think anybody like me – I can state my position on abortion, but other than that, leave the issue alone when we are in the kind of economic situation, and frankly, national security situation that we’re in.”

In 2008 election I was for Mccain, since he was co-author of Bush era immigration bill, but when he lost his presidetial bid, he went too far right and filp-flop on many of his own stance on immigration. I will never trust this old frek whoes only known for politics and nothing eles. DO NOT TRUST ANY GOPERR....

I really wonder what they can even try to do about abortion. Abortion is legal since Roe v. Wade only way to make it illegal is either to amend the constitution or get in a very conservative supreme court and have it overturn Roe v. Wade (which really makes me wonder what type of case could actually do that).

I am happy to see this. sen McCain has become one of the leading voices for republicans on issues. I like his common sense no BS approach. Hopefully after the fiscal cliff fight immigration will come next. who knows maybe the dream act will get passed first.

Common sense and no BS? You're joking right? This man knows nothing other than trying to win re-election. He has to be the most disingenuous person in US politics.

I don't care about previous flip-flops as long as we can get the votes we need from GOP, without GOP votes there will be no CIR.

I love McCain. He was the biggest supporter before 2008 elections.

And then he turned his back on us and common decency. You still love him?
