I think it would be good to focus on, for this weekend, the military aspect of DREAM.

If you have any ambitions to enlist in our armed forces, please include your wishes as part of your message to the Senator. Tell him/her that you wish to enlist but cannot do so because of DoD regulations. If you have friends who are also undocumented but wish to join, please stress this also. Lastly, include the fact the DREAM Act has some support from the Defense Department. Recent reports have stated that the military is not meeting its recruitment goals. Why not pass the DREAM Act to remedy this situation?

However, please feel free to include whatever personal touches you wish to your message. You might also consider mentioning the Juan Gomez case and how the DREAM Act would help others like him. Just make sure you include something relating to the military option in DREAM.

Don't just hope, wish, and pray that DREAM will pass. Do something about it! At the risk of making an assumption, it seems that it is the same few people that are calling each day. We must mobilize and act as a unit if we are to succeed. That means, EVERYONE PULLS THEIR WEIGHT! Make use of any free time to call!

G'luck, everyone!

At the same time we don't want to mention the military aspect of it TOO much guys.. or they might get the idea in their head to create a bill with just legalization for those who join the military.. or just a bill that allows illegals to serve in the military..and guys if that happens we are F*CKED. Dream can not pass on the education aspect alone!

I understand your concern, but at its core, this bill has always been a two-pronged piece of legislation: education and the military. Durbin understands this, and will not allow this bill to turn solely into a military bill. This bill will not pass if we do not get the support of those who wish to emphasize the military option , including Senator Lugar. If you have any wishes to join the military, then it certainly won't hinder our cause one bit to mention it. At any rate, please partake in this weekend campaign!

It's not Durbin I'm worried about.. I know he is 100% on our side...

I'm worried about someone who is against the DREAM act becuase of it's tuition and education aspects getting the idea to make their OWN bill for just the military part. If that happened it would surely get more than 60 votes and then DREAM would loose it's momentum

At the very least, mention the military option to senators that have strong ties to the military, as well as members of the Armed Forces committee. Senators Webb, Levin, and Lugar are good examples of senators that are receptive to the military option.

As long as they already support DREAM and have no reason to create a military bill

Other talking points include: DREAM Act hunger strikes, Juan Gomez, and Iraq veteran Orlando Castaneda. There are a myriad of issues to mention relating to the DREAM Act. We must not waste these opportunities. The time is now to strike! We must not succumb to apathy!

At the risk of posting to myself and Tasksgirl only, I'd like to add that someone on our board mentioned that Senator Isakson does not support this bill because it gives free tuition to illegal immigrants, or something to that effect. When/if you call Senator Isakson, please emphasize the fact that the DREAM Act does not automatically give undocumented students access to in-state tuition, but rather amends the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to allow states to determine residency requirements for granting in-state tuition. If Senator Isakson's state of Georgia does not wish to do grant in-state tuition, then they do not have to. In a way, it's much like REAL ID.

Hopefully some more people decide to call over the weekend. If you don't feel compelled to call all the numbers on the list, at the very least call those that are on the fence. Campaigns such as this are of little use if but a few people choose to participate. I've called the list twice, and I'll call again tomorrow. If you care to join in, thanks.
