I wonder, if somebody would write an opinion piece and submit it to a major newspaper... Like the LA Times, SF Chronicle, San Jose Mercury, etc. IF it gets published, maybe we can get people to support it more? Iono if this is a good idea or not. What do yall think?

I've been sending some to the Houston Chronicle, so I've got you from this end.

Anything that gets the word out and starts a discussion is great.

I've mailed op-ed letters to about a dozen major newspapers in the New York area but so far only got responses like "we'll consider it" and "thank you but we are not currently interested in this topic". As far as I know to have a piece published in a major newspaper has nothing to do with good writing, it has to do with your name. If your name is not recognizable they tend not to publish it.

Maybe someone could persuade that Juan kid who is in the news to write one, and send it out to a bunch of papers ?

Hey me too, but the Chronicle hasn't sent me back anything, and neither have any of the other major ones, like the NY Times, Boston Globe etc etc. I think it does have to do w/name and prestige, and one e-mail out of the thousands they must get a day is likely to be ignored. So been there, done that, but maybe someone could be more succesful another time around...

Our campus paper did a front page story on DREAM during the summer session, so I was thinking it might be nice if they'd do another one, but I'm not sure if they'll want to repeat the topic. I'll give it another shot though.

I think for normal people you write Letters to the Editor and not op eds.

Awesome. Are you going to UH or some other school?

Yeah, I haven't gotten any response either. I wasn't expecting to be published on the main editorial page or anything, but the area next to the letters where they don't even put your name on it. So far, no luck. It would have been great to get on in the Sunday paper, but even the monday one will be awesome.

I have sent out op ed pieces

so far it has only gotten through El Diario La Prensa the spanish language newspaper

You just have to learn how to cultivate media relationships you do this through events.

Yeah I go to UH; what about you? I'm trying to catch up on school, then I'm gonna see what info I can get from the DREAM group here on campus, if they still exist...
