Gutierrez: I’ve got 40-50 GOP votes for immigration reform[video]

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) told Post Politics’ Ed O’Keefe in a newly released interview that the House has more than enough GOP votes — around 40 or 50 — to pass comprehensive immigration reform if it were brought to a vote.

But Gutierrez said Republicans who support the idea are staying deliberately quiet to avoid a backlash from conservative activists.

“Some of them I’ve spoken to, and they say, ‘Love to do the activity with you, I want to be able to vote for it, I really don’t need to draw attention to myself at this point,’ but we can count on it,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said that Obama asked him in 2009 to find him 40 or 50 Republicans who would sign on to a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

“If they asked me today, go find those 40 or 50 Republicans, I’d tell them I found them,” Gutierrez said. “I know where they’re at. They’re here. They’re present.”

The reason the Senate-passed immigration bill hasn’t come to a vote in the House is because it doesn’t satisfy the so-called Hastert Rule – the practice of not bringing a bill to a vote unless a majority of the majority party’s members support it.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), an ally of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), has even suggested that the Senate bill wouldn’t pass in the House if it was brought to a vote.

If Boehner didn’t enforce the Hastert Rule — something he has sworn he will do — and all 201 House Democrats backed an immigration bill, the bill would need 17 Republicans to pass.

Gutierrez said he’s got the support of at least 195 House Democrats, which would mean the effort needs 23 Republicans to pass, minus the Hastert Rule.

House Republicans have instead moved forward with a more piecemeal approach to immigration reform, moving a number of bills that deal with border security and other issues.

There's 40-50 Republicans that will vote for CIR. But what exactly does this mean? Does this mean that 40-50 Republicans will vote for the Senate bill? Are they willing to vote on a discharge petition? Or does it mean those Republicans will vote for the Gang of 7 bill?

Well, CIR = Comprehensive Immigration Bill, which is the Senate bill. The House does not want to do a comprehensive bill, but rather going on the piecemeal approach.

Have no idea about the discharge petition and the Gang 7 Bill (although G7's Bill looks to be comprehensive, it doesn't look like House is considering it. Hell, they can't even produce it).

I'm starting to call bullshit on that Gang of 7 Bill. I believe they are lying about whether it is done or not. Whether that is to our advantage or not remains to be seen. I think they held off releasing the bill until after the August recess to give cover to the moderate Republicans that may support it.

There is no way the bill took this long to iron out. Not when Labrador said that one of the few things they had left to deal with was undocumented folks and ACA. He left the group months ago.

I agree, Gang of 7 is nothing to bother with. Nothing can amount from it.

I have begun to believe that Rep.Gutierrez is lying through his teeth. I, too, call BS on his story.

First, there was the claim last year that the goal was to stop deportations for non-criminal undocumented immigrants (never happened); Second, there was the imaginary 'bi-partisan' bill to be 'finished by month's end' (hahahahahahahahahahaha, that was a good one), cue in the months of Januray to present; now there is this claim that we can incrementally have comprehensive immigration reform.

Is that so? Then the Democrats are a bunch of cynical a**holes who could have put DA, AgJobs, etc for a bipartisan vote and gained passage for such YEARS ago.

Also, I don't know what he is thinking, but he is going on media rounds and changing the tone and narrative considerably from forum to forum. On Univision, he doesn't sound enthusiastic, on English language media he sings a different tune. I am tired, tired of all the bulls***, his, the White House's , the Republicans, the lot of them.
