Also, not all that thrilled since it's not full enlistment. But there it is.

Well problem with MAVNI is that:
  • It's US army only, so you cannot enlist into Airforce, Navy, or any other branch of the military (that could be changed with an EO, but I don't see a certain spineless democratic president signing one). In case you don't know - the army are the foot troops, you'll be one of those guys on front lines with highest risk of getting shot at.
  • It requires you to either be a medical doctor, or be a native of a country which speaks a language that they seek, also note that a majority of the languages on the list will make you scratch your head and ask yourself "where do they speak this?". You cannot learn the language required to qualify unless you're a citizen of a country that speaks the said language (so you cannot for example learn Czech in order to qualify unless you are a Czech citizen).
  • If you enlist as a non-citizen you most likely will be limited to the shittier jobs of the military, since you won't have the necessary security clearance for the better ones. (This applies to all non-citizen enlistees).

I'm a little disappointed, since my native language that I can sort of speak and write (really rusty but I could definitely shape it up) is no longer on the list for 2014.

Mavni could definitely be extended onto other branches and without the language requirement, however I really don't seem Obama doing anything of the like.

You will be a citizen once you enlist, so they can in fact deploy you.

Instant citizenship? highly doubt it. Even if an immigrant has a green card, during war time the process for obtaining citizenship is roughly 3 years instead of 5, in some cases 2 years because some jobs mandate security clearance(Computer jobs, MPs, etc, etc). Even if you're right, this doesn't do shit for me, if it just includes Army. oh and being deployed isn't a bad thing, My roommate just got back from Qatar and he made 35k in just 4 months, and he currently works at Join Base Andrews, MD.

Actually, it pretty much is instantaneous unless they change the rules and apply them differently to DREAMers, which is an entirely different legal/moral issue. Should they leave the rules in place as they are now, the EO from 2002 allows you to file for your citizenship after only one day of active duty.

Now they have a process that allows you to start the process at basic training. If you're lucky, within six months you'll be a citizen.

Quote:
USCIS established the Naturalization at Basic Training Initiative in August 2009 with the Army to give noncitizen enlistees the opportunity to naturalize when they graduate from basic training. Under this initiative, USCIS conducts all naturalization processing including the capture of biometrics, the naturalization interview and administration of the Oath of Allegiance on the military base. Since 2009 USCIS has expanded the initiative to the Navy, Air Force, and finally to the Marine Corps in 2013, giving enlistees of all branches an equal opportunity to (in most cases) leave basic training as U.S. citizens.
Source

Quote:
About 1,000 soldiers and sailors completed the citizenship process at basic training sites in fiscal year 2010, which ended Sept. 30. About 660 have been able to complete it in the first six months of this fiscal year, said Chris Rhatigan, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Washington.

What they are not telling us is that you have to serve for at minimum 5 years or risk having your citizenship revoked.

The silver lining in all of this is that if you meet the requirements, make it out of boot camp and manage to pay the fees, some of us will be able to file for our parents within a short window of time (they are citizens by 2016/2017 vs whatever is in CIR if it is passed). And considering the penalties the Republicans want them to pay (i.e. going before a judge) this may be a better option for a lot of mixed status families.
