Obama will 'make good' on immigration reform promise

President Obama will “make good” on his promise to implement executive actions to address problems with the immigration system by the end of the year, press secretary Josh Earnest said Sunday.

The president had initially pledged to take unilateral action on immigration by the end of the summer, but the White House announced earlier this month that he would hold off until after the midterm elections.
White House officials have said Obama was concerned that moving before the midterm elections would make reform a partisan issue and polarize support against it, although the move was widely seen as a concession to Senate Democrats who were locked in tough reelection battles and begged Obama to hold off.

The delay has bred new concerns among immigration activists that the president will not ever take the executive action, but Earnest insisted that was not the case.

“This is a promise the president will keep,” Earnest said during an appearance on Telemundo’s “Enfoque con Jose Diaz-Balart.” “The president has tasked his team with looking at the law and determining what kind of executive authority he can use to try to address the problems of our broken immigration system. They've come up with some good solutions. They will be finalized before the end of the year and the president will announce them before the end of the year.”

Earnest noted that “the president has taken action before that has made a difference in try to addressing some of these problems,” pointing to his deferred action program that allows some who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children to remain without the threat of deportation.

"The president believed that they needed relief. And working with his Homeland Security secretary and other law enforcement officials, was able to bring them relief,” Earnest said. “The president made good on that promise and the president's gonna make good on this promise too.”

The White House has seen a sharp drop in Latino support following his decision to punt on immigration reform. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll earlier this month showed just 47 percent of Hispanic voters approve of the president's performance, down 15 percentage points from April, 2013. Fewer than 3 in 10 Latino voters described themselves as "very positive" about Obama.

In a Pew Research poll also released this month, a majority of Hispanic Democrats - 52 percent - said their party wasn't doing a good job on immigration issues.

The president is expected to explain his decision to delay executive action in greater detail on Thursday night, when he’s set to address the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual awards dinner.

Honestly, this is the at least a 10th thread about the same thing - Obama saying "I'll delay it and Boner might do something on immigration". Might as well stop posting them until he gets something done (actually get something done, not talk about getting stuff done).

It's amazing how quickly people take things for granted. Can you live 2 weeks without your EAD, Driver license, and social security before talking?

We need action on immigration. Relief would be great for our families but you calling the president that ALLOWED you to work, drive, and provide for your family a "clown" does not help this circumstance at all. I wish you people would think about this. The more of you post comments like this crap and the more people reads comments like this, more people will believe that democrats and republicans are all the same. When that happens, we are more likely to get a Republican president and we'll see how bad things can really get.

He dismissed the notion that he has the authority to give us citizenship, which is true.

Mute point though, what he gave us was unprecedented and something that hasn't been done for undocumented immigrants in the last 25 years.

I like the way obama has handled things granted it's impossible to do everything right. Having said that , I dislike that he says he can't do certain things and then does exactly that for political gains. I dislike that he made such strong comments and riled everyone up only to come up with the same "soon" excuse. I understand the midterm elections are important, but he surely knew that before he made those announcements. I just don't understand. He gave republicans ammo by doing this. He upset a good portion of the immigrant community.
Maybe he'll come through , but maybe it'll be too late by then.

I would like to thank the former Secretary of Homeland Security - Janet Napolitano for authorizing and announcing DACA. I would also like to thank the Pentagon and the Secretary of Defense - Chuck Hagel for extending MAVNI onto us.

In regards to Obama, I'd just prefer is he'd stay quiet if he is not planning on doing anything with his own hands. The less he mentions us, the less the antis will care, and the bigger chance that DACA will be like TPS - continuously extended for years. Ever hear antis scream about deporting El Salvadorians or some other TPS designates? No? Well that's why. It's never mentioned so no one cares.

Only thing that man can be accredited for in immigration is making false election promises, stalling, and talking the same non-sense for 5.5 years now.


Also, before Obama gets out of office I'll be legal. Either I'll get my green card via my step father, or I'll marry my gf, or I'll enlist via MAVNI if possible. You all should be looking for other escape avenues, waiting until big brother government decides to finally stop treating you like a stray cat isn't going to work. We've been playing this game for years - it's the same constant bullshit. Republicans have majority - they don't care enough to hunt us down. Democrats have majority - they don't care to legalize us, go back to articles from 2008-2010, any to do list had immigration as the very very last item. There's a toss up - Democrats and few republicans pass something in one house and the other lets it die (2006-2007 and now).

Last time that I checked, an executive order was signed and issued by the head of the executive branch i.e. the president of the United States. If you really believe that President Obama had nothing to do with the executive order that granted work authorization and protection from deportation, you are seriously lacking sense. Recommendations for discretionary tactics by secretaries of defense and homeland security have always existed but have always just been that, RECOMMENDATIONS. It was Obama that actually signed those ideas into "law" (albeit temporary). So for that, you must thank the commander and chief.

On a more personal note, you sound like a child, with your constant crying. We all hope for more relief from the president but have the common sense not bash him when he doesn't do what we want him to do. Grow up.

Ah so you're banking on the idea that you're set (immigration wise) so you no longer need the help of this president. Now you can join the rest of Americans (at least the ones who despise him) on how "worthless" this president is. He already did all he could for you so screw him, is that the thought?
