I received this in an e-mail about two conferences having to do with immigration reform. Some of you might be interested in attending them if you are in the area or perhaps getting involved in other things the groups are doing. One is in MN; the other in Detriot.

INVITE: 1,000 Mile March for Immigrant Rights--Strategy Meeting Tuesday January 8, 9:00am

Saludos Immigrant Rights Advocates and Allies,

Hope all is well on your end.

As some of you know, efforts to change the current anti-immigrant political climate by doing a 1,000 mile walk from St. Paul to Washington DC in March 2008 are in the works.
Irineo Mojica has met with many of you to craft and present the idea, he's been traveling the various states the march would cross in order to raise awareness. The feedback has been extraordinary and people are ready for an action like this one. Many of you have expressed interest in not only engaging with the excitement and potential for this march but also with the challenges that lie ahead in making it happen.

We would like to invite you to a strategy meeting for the march, the goal of this meeting would be to:

-bring more unity within the immigrant rights movement and connect it to other people of color and social justice movements in MN
-learn about the plan for the march
-create working committees that will meet regularly to help the march

Date: Tuesday, January 8th, 2008
Time: 9:00 am - 12 noon
Location: TBA

SHARE this invite with other people like documentry folks (video, photo, blog, etc.) who can help document the march for security and history's sake; legal observers who can provide safety for marchers; nurses and doctors who can committ to looking after the health of marchers; and other organizations and groups who might be interested in this effort.

RSVP by emailing me back to let us know if you can make it.

For more information or for questions please contact Irineo at 612-232-6329.

Si se puede!
Irineo, Mariano and Alondra

Detroit conference to build unity for immigrant rights
Quote:

Commentary by Carlos Montes

Los Angeles, CA - The battle is on. Attacks against immigrants are intensifying. There is an upturn in ICE raids, mass detentions and deportations. Jailing, beatings and killings by police and ICE agents continue, with hate crimes against Mexicans on the rise.

Unite to Struggle

We must unite all progressive forces in a united front to beat back these attacks and again take back the offensive to win complete legalization for all immigrants and end the war in Iraq. We call on all pro-immigrant rights and progressive organizations to join us for a national unity conference on Feb. 22-23, 2008 in Detroit, Michigan.

Plan of Action

At this conference we will unite on a plan of action for mass national mobilizations in major cities for May 1, 2008. Without struggle there will be no victories. We will not wait for a change in politicians; our people demand an end to the attacks now and legalization! We do not have the luxury of waiting for another administration while families are being torn apart by deportations.

We know that the masses are the real makers of history and by uniting and mobilizing the masses we will change history. We are living in a time of crisis, with wars, recessions and racist attacks and it is during critical times that major changes take place. Lets all be part of making history and join us in Detroit, to build unity and a plan of action on Feb. 22-23, 2008. The conference is organized by the National May 1st Movement for Worker and Immigrant Rights.

Carlos Montes is a veteran fighter in the Chicano Liberation movement, a founder of the Brown Berets and the Chicano Moratorium. He is a leader in the March 25th Coalition and Latinos Against War, both based in East Los Angeles, California. For more information contact: www.latinoscontralaguerra.org
