One day after President Donald Trump ordered an end to protections for unauthorized immigrants who came to the United States as children, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer met privately with Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

The Sept. 6 meeting at the Mayor’s Office lasted one hour, according to his calendar, released under the California Public Records Act.

Mayoral spokesman Craig Gustafson said Jobs sought the meeting to discuss DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program set up by President Obama.

“It was to discuss their mutual support for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals,” Gustafson wrote in an email about Faulconer’s meeting with Jobs.
“She was in San Diego for something else and requested a meeting with the mayor.”

Jobs has promoted immigration reform through the Emerson Collective, a Palo Alto organization that works to remove barriers to opportunity for all people.

Under DACA, unauthorized immigrants who were brought to the United States as children were asked to register with the government on the pledge they would not be deported.

The Trump order last month gave Congress six months to adopt new legislation before deportations could begin.

Neither the Mayor’s Office or the Emerson Collective would specify what if anything Jobs sought from the mayor during the meeting, or thereafter.

Faulconer, who like Trump is a Republican, has generally supported DACA recipients, also known as “dreamers.” He issued a statement the day Trump signed the DACA order.

“The young men and women here under DACA — many of who are living in the only country they have ever known — are students, innovators, business owners and veterans who enrich our country and contribute to our economy and culture,” he said. “Only Congress can provide the legal certainty on immigration that our country needs and these young people are relying on, and it’s time for the legislative branch to act.”

This brings up an important point: Laurene, will you marry me?
