As you may have heard from me before, I am the co-owner of The REAL American Dream, a small, nonprofit organization looking to make a change. We fully support the Dream Act and everything it stands for. We want the American Dream to be available to all.

We've been thinking of fundraising opportunities so that we could help the cause. I was trying to look up a cause that would benefit from a donation, but then I realized, we could always help out on our own.

This is the idea so far:

We're thinking of making T-Shirts with our cause, making stickers, and using positivelyfundraising.com to gain money, and then as well take donations. We will "sponsor" an undocumented immigrant in the position of going to college or trying to go to college and make it in life. We probably won't make much, but perhaps we could cover the cost of a book...or a semester for example.

The only problem is, I'm a bit confused. I'm scared it won't work, and I'm getting mixed information. That's where I need your help.

For those who know California Law:

I know that an undocumented immigrant can get into community college and the UC/Cal State system. Thsoe who somehow pay their way through school and complete their credits on their way to graduation...

is graduation possible? Are they actually ALLOWED to graduate from college? I've heard different and this I did not know, since they are allowed to attend, it doesn't make sense that they cannot graduate.

Help??

i would like to volunteer to be the immigrant you help to go to college. I recently had to drop out of rutgers cause i couldn't afford the international student tuition rate that i was forced to pay even though i graduated from a new jersey highschool. I plan on attending the county college in the spring. Let me know

Definitely a possibility. =] We haven't finalized anything just yet, but go ahead and add the site if you have a myspace. If you don't, email us: [email protected] (this email is open for anyone else as well).

Again, it won't be much, but maybe just a book, or something...again, nothing's finalized at this time. =]

I'm pretty sure that you can graduate with a degree after all you paid for that damn degree! But without social security you won't be able to get a job so your degree is pretty useless.

btw you should think about also having a facebook account. Myspace isn't as popular as it used to be. I think social networks are an excellent way for us to inform people about the dream act

I personally have a facebook account, but honestly it's too damn confusing and there are, in my opinion, WAY TOO MANY APPS.

Which is why i'm not liking myspace right now, but I've learned to avoid them. =]

Perhaps I'll try and start one there tomorrow...if I have time.

And BTW update:

I just e-mailed OCTA (the orange county transportation authority) to see if they can donate a month pass or something (they're only like 30 bucks) to see if we could use that in the whole process. Again, still working stuff out here...trying to see what we could get to help.

hmm that is very good idea and helpful... but kinda hard... It isn't as simple as raising money for a hurricane, this is raising money for illegals lol. Plus finding the illegals, going through all that is tough. I say you just set up a scholarship system for books or whatever. Take internet interview/ application and send them a check or something. I would love to help but truthfully I would rather spend that time working so I can pay my tuition.

you can graduate without a problem. But depending on your major... you may not be granted your "license" to practice. I can graduate from my program with a certificate of nursing but won't be granted a license from the government, regardless of what I score on my nursing exam (NCLEX).

I definitely see your point, that's why nothing is finalized. It's probably going to be like a scholarship thing, but not extreme amounts. Because if that happens, it's like, we'll raise alot and it'll just go to one person. We want to help as many as we can.

I tried to contact OCTA but they dont' do that sort of thing, so there goes that idea. But anyways, it will probably just be on a contact info sort of thing. It'll be hard, but hopefully something will work out where we could do something to help these kids out till the DREAM act actually passes.

Does anyone else here have a suggestion on which direction to go?

hm what about opening a paypal account or something and then we could just mass email a lot of people explaining them our cause and asking them to donate five dollars or some amount and in return we would send them something simple like a button or a picture or a sticker, etc. Also you could write to google and ask them if they can help us in any way. oo we could also have a google checkout account.
