A close friend of mine is
the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
@ our college in Arizona
and we discuss music ever
so often
over a bottle of vodka (aside from the point)
so she asked me about writing an article
for the newspaper

she didn't insist that it had to be about
music..
so IM REALLY CONSIDERING
WRITING AN ARTICLE
ABOUT THE D.R.E.A.M. Act
I'M not sure where to start,
SO I NEED SOME HELP IN
REGARDS AS TO WHAT ANGLE TO
APPROACH IT FROM.

I consider myself a great writer
but need help starting and getting ideas
its a rather large college
(25k pop & 15% hispanic)
and will be great publicity for us!

Well, I wasn't willing to give my two cents since soooooo many dreamers are just jumping at the opportunity to help.

I really don't know what to say, personally, even if ask for help, I have people giving me advice when is something related to writing. It is personal for me. Still, I think you should look at it at the point of why it is important to you. Some times the most personal ideas are the best because they leave the logic and the hype and connect our common humanity.

okay, that sounds awesome but is a lame advice. Clearly you shouldn't say you are undocumented. I think you are smart enough to skip that "the dream act is important to me be because, it will give me a DL/chance/alcohol" Also, what grabs your attention on the lounge or the news section. Are you interested in articles related with the dream act law? articles about the explosion in online student organizing efforts? Do you get moved by the daily struggles that Dream Act students face day to day?

I sell the Dream Act to people around me with a factual story. A girl from a nearby town is a nurse. She spend her whole life here and graduated from the local college. She cannot be a nurse because of her legal status and has to work under the table as a nanny. One of the many troubles that her town faces is the lack of nurses. Yet, they cannot hire her because of her legal status. I found this story really interesting because of the idiocy of the situation. She is a nurse and they need a nurse and no one can do nothing about it.

Well, people around me also find the story very compelling. It is a neat story because it shows that her legal status not only affects her, it affects her community.

This is just my example, duh, just find out one little thing about all this that really gets your attention and focus on it. I hope this helps you to be successful on this gig and hope it comes awesome.

- Get some stories from Dreamies in Arizona ( make it personal)
- Get info. on networks in Arizona and plug them into the article as resource centers. There is a coalition in AZ working on DREAM.

Please make sure to make clear how hard (or impossible) it is for dreamies to become legalized right now, without DREAM Act. If you just tell sob stories then people won't feel very much sympathy for us because, believe it or not, some still have the idea of "why don't they just apply for residency?" or "they just want in-state tuition, that's not fair!". Yep, some people still think like that.

Hey,
if you decide the do the article about the dream Act post it on the news section ...or give me the link and I posted if you fear people might find who you are. If not, still put it on the off topic section. I would love to read it.

Thanks

like MAg said get dreamie stories from AZ, network groups that are directly connected with your school/ AZ dreamies. and ya, sob stories are not going to cut it. i would try to come with a logical perspective, on how dreamies are able to help mold society with the overachieving students that graduate every year. How we would be able to contribute to the us workforce. instead of showing that we are illegal aliens, show that we are human just like everyone else.
