If current undocumented students were granted a college/vocational education, the impending crisis may not be as bad as predicted because there would be a larger pool of ready labor to fill positions in needed industries.


Also if the DREAM Act were passed, the positive repercussions could impact one of Obama’s listed educational campaign promises — the dropout problem. As it stands now, the majority of high school dropouts are Latino students. The percentage of how many are undocumented is not known but from anecdotal reports they comprise a fair share. The reason given for why these students drop out is because they see no need in furthering their academic careers since they can’t go anywhere — they can’t go to college, or if they can (some states do allow undocumented students to attend college) they won’t be able to put their degrees to work.


It’s time to give every student an education or training that will not only let them provide for themselves and their families but contribute to the well-being of this country. It’s a sad day when hope for sustaining the nation’s economy has to be pinned on those who only come to earn a dollar and don’t necessarily want anything more.

We have to try to find ways of making this more about education reform rather than CIR. Even if these national groups don't want to help pass dream separately from CIR, we must fight for it ourselves.
