The way I see it, many of the forces in power would have us deported immediately (if it were possible of course). Trump ran on a platform of total deportation, building a wall, reforming the immigration system to reflect a nativist and racist agenda, and banning Muslims.
Of course, I think Trump even knew all of that wouldn't be possible, but he had to start really far to the right in order to have room to compromise.
We are well into one of the most hateful and racist presidencies in decades, and yet I am thriving in a PhD program, have DACA, was able to apply for renewal, and I (we) are closer to having some type of legal status than we ever have been. That, to me , is a miracle.
We are living in tough times, that is undeniable. But, there are two options. We can cry and moan about being under a racist administration and essentially be obstructionist as Democrats and far left organizations have been. Or, Democrats and those same organizations can recognize that they failed miserable in reforming immigration when they had the chance, they failed miserable in convincing the American public that this was the right and urgent thing to do, and now deal with the consequences by dealing with reality.
Democrats, and I include myself in this group, lost the battle on immigration. Republicans won that battle. Now, how do we minimize the damage?
